What do you get when you mix a line of fabric you’ve been dying to play with, and the chance to learn some new techniques? This pillow.
I had the opportunity to have some #fqsfun and make their new Sundance Dresden pillow pattern using Shimmer 2 by Jennifer Sampou. The teal and feathers and metallic have been calling my name all year since I first learned of this line, and being able to use fabric I love, with practicing dresdens – something I’ve only played with once or twice before, was just glorious!
And I just had to use this darker feather print for the backing, with those feathers fairly well aligned on both panels, if I may say so myself!
The pattern recommends using applique glue to baste the dresden plate to the background fabric. This product was also something I’ve been meaning to get around to trying, but just never had the right project, and thus reason to get some of the glue! I used Appli-Glue by Jillily Studio, and was very impressed. You only need a little bit, and by the time you’ve made it all the way around applying the glue to the plate, it was dry and it was not going to be moving anytime soon! I like that Appli-Glue was specifically produced to use for quilt applique, especially when the quilted item may not get washed soon/ever (ie. in cases of show quilts). It means there’s no nasty chemicals in it that will effect your project over time.
The cherry on top of making the Sundance Dresden pillow was that my husband particularly likes it! He appreciates the more masculine colouring and design, despite it being a rather traditional dresden design. Just goes to show how important fabric choice is to the final product! Keen eyes may also note that the pattern calls for adding binding, but I wanted to keep to the clean, modern, masculine effect and skip the binding. No surprise here that I made a pattern my own once again, ha! That’s also reflected in the simple quilting.
I was gifted the ruler and provided with a gift certificate to purchase needed supplies. All opinions are 100% my own.

Love your pillow! I find it really hard to find good masculine patterns / I am making my brother a quilt for his 30th so am on the hunt for a good pattern. Love that feather fabric too!

It’s a beauty! So fresh and calm. I like the feather print most, and I agree whole Shimmer 2 is adorable!

WOW – what a beautiful cushion. Love it.

The colours/ fabric choices in this cushion make it special..
I do a lot of appliqué, and I can see how glue would come in handy here. Big pieces, like a Dresden plate, can be particularly tricky to hold still while you sew.

I love the use of those fabrics with this design, very effective. Makes me want to dig into the stash of the same fabrics that I got at the Houston Quilt Show right now!
