As many of you will know, I write a column for Make Modern entitled Maths & Methods – all about the maths behind quilting. In this month’s issue, I talked about how to strip-piece half-square triangles using jelly roll strips. It is an awesome method to have up your sleeve to get more out of your jelly rolls, as they can finish at 2″! To put it into practice, I also shared a jelly roll quilt pattern using this method, called Jelly Baby.
Jelly Baby uses HSTs in a 9-patch block, and floats the blocks in an alternate grid setting… but with an unexpected little twist. Can you spot it?
You can also see that I used simple straight line quilting, starting less dense in the top left corner and increasing the number of lines as I approached the bottom right corner. I added some perpendicular quilting to highlight the twist.
I backed it with some of the classic Ikea numbers print, my first time using it, and probably the last as I believe it’s now out of print!

This quilt is amazing. I love, love, love the navy background fabrics. I’m going to have to make a quilt with navy backing this year. Great pattern design as well.
