Welcome back to the Modern HST Sampler quilt along! If this is the first time you’re reading this, fear not, you can join in at anytime. Start with this one or go back to the beginning, it’s up to you. This year, we’re making 24 modern half-square triangle quilt blocks, and by the end of the year, you will not only have a beautiful sampler quilt, but you will have some well-honed HST making skills. If you need more information, you can find out more about:

- The rest of the blocks!
This quilt along has been structured so that you slowly ease your way into half-square triangles. We started off with 4″ finished HSTs (4.5″ unfinished), and then conquered 3″ finished HSTs (3.5″ unfinished), before working with the 4″ and 2″ finished HSTs. This time, we’re back to making 3″ finished HSTs, but also adding in half-sized ones too that finish at 1.5″ (2″ unfinished)! We’re still using the same methods of making the half-square triangles – 2 at a time, 4 at a time, and 8 at a time – but now we’re smaller again.
Bejewelled plays with big half-square triangles, small ones, and squares too. Have some fun with what colours you choose to use, and where you put them!

1 – 4″ x 4″ square
Prints 2 (four lights), from each cut:
1 – 3″ x 3″ square
Background:
16 – 2″ x 2″ squares
4 – 3″ x 3″ squares

Block should measure 12.5” x 12.5”. Use a 1/4″ seam and press seams toward the darker print, or as directed.
Instructions
Step 1. Pair a Print 1 and a 4″ background square. Make 2 HSTs and press the seams towards the dark print. Trim to 3.5″ square. Repeat for each print.
Step 2. Pair a Print 2 and the 3″ background square. Make 2 HSTs and press the seams towards the print. Trim to 2″ square. Repeat for each print.
Step 3. Take the 2″ background squares, 2″ print 1 squares, and the 2″ HSTs. Following the diagram below, make two for each colour for a total of 8 units.
Step 4. Arrange the large HSTs and the units from Step 3 to create the Bejewelled quilt block. Piece the rows together, pressing seams in alternate directions.
Step 5. Sew the block together, pressing seams open.

struggling a bit asd to why we want 4.75″ squares to make the small half square triangles in the light prints and the bakgeound, thinking we need to make 2 HSTs in each colour
Alyce says
Brain fart had me telling you to make 8 HSTs from them! So yes, that’s a bit too big. I’ve edited the text – cut them at 3″.
Anita says
There’s an error in the cutting instructions for the light squares:
I cut my light squares 2.5″ (the same with the corresponding background squares). Trim the HSTs to 2″ square.
Alyce says
Yes, I accidentally had it written down for making 8 from that size when you only need 2 from each print, for a total of 8. I’ve edited the text to cut them at 3″, as I think most people will find 2.5″ for making two HSTs a bit tight.
Susan says
Thanks! Now I have two to catch up, and they are both delightful! Need to get busy soon! Are you doing a BOM next year, or have we tired you out? =)
Alyce says
Haha!!! A little tired yes, so there IS a BOM but a little different from the past 2 years! All shall be revealed next week 😉
