Welcome back to the Happy Scrappy QAL! For all the QAL details, you can read this blog post here that provides more info on how this QAL is being run, but here’s the quick rundown to remind you:
- The Happy Scrappy QAL will be run right here on my blog, and go for about a month
- It’s a mystery quilt designed to use up some scraps, so get scrap-bin digging and don’t overthink the process
- Every 2-3 days I’ll be posting what blocks to make – either new ones, or some repeats of already-shared block patterns
- Each set of blocks posted is designed to take up to 30 minutes each day over the next 2-3 days
- Join in the QAL community on Instagram using #happyscrappyqal and in the Blossom Heart Quilts Facebook group.
If you’re just tuning in now, here’s the previous posts:
Post 1 – Cross Block + 4 Ribbon Blocks
Post 2 – Arch Blocks
Post 3 – Print Nine-Patch Blocks
Today, we’re making eight more Ribbon blocks.
Oh yes, eight more Ribbon blocks! You already know how to make these fellas, so it’s time to make some more.
What you’ll need
Print:
8 – 3 1/2″ x 9 1/2″ rectangles
Background:
16 – 3 1/2″ x 3 1/2″ squares
See the tutorial for the ribbon quilt blocks here.
Blocks should measure 3 1/2″ x 9 1/2″. Make eight blocks.
Share your blocks using #happyscrappyqal on Instagram and in the Blossom Heart Quilts Facebook group! The next blog post will go up on Monday. If you’d like to make sure you don’t miss any posts, sign up for my weekly newsletter and you’ll be reminded each week of what blocks to make. Remember – this is a sew-at-your-own-pace QAL!

Hi, maybe now is a good time to remind your ladies that while they have their fabric and sewing machine out, they could make face masks for themselves, family and friends.

when I printed out your directions, it called for 4 ribbon blocks in step 4. Please let people know if something changes after the fact. Thank you

Hi Eileen,
This is a mystery QAL structured so that those following along find out every couple of days what blocks to make next via new blog posts. It is structured like that so that quilters are able to spend 15-30 minutes sewing each day.
As such, at the time of that original post being published, 4 Ribbon blocks was the correct amount to make. If you are following along, that is still the correct amount to make at that stage to help keep the mystery aspect alive.
When the QAL is finished, and I share the finished quilt, I will share the final amount of each block to make, and link to the tutorials.

I know how Mystery QALs work. All I am saying is that when I looked at clue 4, after I sewed clue 3 and before I sewed clue 5, it said to make 4 blocks.
Now clue 4 is different – it calls for 8 ribbon blocks.
Do I have to go back and check each clue every time?

My apologies for the misunderstanding. After your feedback, I added ‘8’ to the post title to help clear up the QAL, but at no point has this post said to make four blocks, the text in this post has always said eight; I’m unsure where you have read four.
