I may have only been here a few weeks, but like any good quilter, I have already indulged in some fabric buying! I brought some fabric with me from Australia – mainly that needed for the WIPs I brought with me, but also a few select fat quarters and some yardage I used to help pad and support my sewing machine in the box. So I’ve gotten to start from nearly scratch again! And the best part? Most, if not all, are Made in Japan. Sounds much cooler than ‘homespun’.
First up we have some red, blue and grey 30cm x WOF cuts (it’s reading navy, but it’s actually a medium grey) just because I needed those elephants, the grey was cheap and the red just looks good with them all! These were bought from a BIG craft store called Yuzawaya. A bit like Spotlight but much, much cooler.
I spotted this half metre cut at my local craft store, Tokai, and it intrigued me so. It’s called ‘Lovely Fair Isle’ although I must admit to originally thinking it seemed a little Incan or such. Oops, my bad. Plus I love the selvage!
And how could I walk past this adorable half metre cut of Little Red?! Exactly, I couldn’t. I foresee some fussy cutting in its future.
I have nil text fabrics. So this mini precut (approx. a fat eighth I think) went straight into my basket. I’ve since tracked it down to being from the Authentic range a couple of years ago – thanks to the ladies who helped me identify it!
Previously I also had nil sewing-themed fabrics. I’ve begun to remedy this and I think this is one of my favourite finds so far! It’s by Doodlebug Designs and I just love the selvage! This half metre will last a while and will also be fussy-cut a lot I think!
Finally we also have these sewing-related mini cuts. I’m very inspired by those spools to finally get around to making a pincushion for myself, especially as I finally bought some leaf pins.
This photo shows that grey cut much better/truer. |
There you have it. The first of many, I can guarantee you! I’ve also bought a few real Japanese fabrics including kimono and yukata remnants, but I’ll save them for next Sunday Stash otherwise this post would be way too long!

It must be so surreal to go fabric shopping in Japan with everything in Yen and sales assistants speaking Japanese but fabric is a universal language. You are going to be the go-to girl for all of us who loooooove (or yet to fall in love) Japanese Kawaii prints. Like Cherie I am in love with little Red too.

I still convert in my head to get an idea of value. So far, pretty good! Most range from about $5-$20/m and the more expensive options are because they’re licensed. And it’s a good thing I know my numbers at least 😉
Oh yes, I have seen sooooo many Kawaii prints!
