Last week I showed off the first half of fabrics I’d bought in Japan, and this week’s stars of my stash is the start of my “true” Japanese fabrics, with a dash of Japanese-themed print…
This shinkansen print is for my son’s transport-themed quilt that I started almost a year ago but never got around to doing much on it. I brought it with me to finish for him for Christmas this year (or maybe earlier if he needs it for sleeping with the colder winters here in Chiba!) and have also had the chance to buy up some more prints like this!
This sakura print is a fat quarter from my local little craft store and has already been cut up and used in a secret project that should be able to be shared soon. It’s just bright and pretty and cheery!
The rest of the prints are offcuts from a kimono/yukata store within my local-ish big craft store and while some are a bit marked or stained, they were too cheap and pretty to not pass up! I’m planning to make a Japanese sampler quilt during our time here and want to make it from indigos and other Japanese navy/white/blue fabrics so I’m excited to have started collecting for that!
Yukata fabric – lightweight cotton |
Kimono silk – stained in spots but will hang it on a wall nonetheless and admire the colours which have sadly not photographed well. |
More silk – just a little piece, fat eighth-ish sized but destined for something Christmassy! |
This last one is a tenugui – literally a handcloth. It’s a lightweight cotton cloth that is used for a hand cloth or decorations, souvenirs, or even sewing. They come in a huge range of designs and I think will work well for my Japanese sampler quilt too.
It’s so exciting seeing my Japanese stash grow! Now to actually plan on how to use them… gotta justify buying it all! Thankfully my husband understands the value in buying “true” Japanese fabrics as he appreciates them too!
Joining up with Finding Fifth for Sunday Stash!

They are lovely fabrics,I had trouble finding fabric when I was visiting Japan. But when I was there two years ago I bought a couple of vintage kiminos and have taken them apart to make a quilt – it is in the UFO pile at the moment. But when I started taking them apart I was crying as they had all been hand sewn, the sewing was just so beautiful.
I hope you enjoy your time in Japan as I’ve visited there many times as I have a Japanese friend now living in Shizuoka & her family lives in Chiba & my daughter was teaching English in Kakagawa for two years.
