I am proud to introduce you to Candy Apples. I won a charm pack of Little Apples about a year ago. I can’t even remember where from now! I’ll be honest – I wasn’t completely sold on the range to begin with. The mustardy green just isn’t me. So I decided to just try a new pattern – a disappearing nine patch – with 9 charms per block.
And as these things tend to, I fell in love with it. The colour combo is just so effective! I sashed and bordered it in white, pieced the backing, and put it away in the cupboard. For months.
It wasn’t until I was packing up ready to move to Japan that it saw the light of day again. On a whim, I shoved it into a ziploc bag and added it to the “padding” for Ellie in her box. Last Friday when I bought a ton of flannel batting, I decided it was time for this baby to be finished. I lightly quilted a 1/4″ away from all the sashing and border seams on both sides to outline the blocks.
The only suitable red that matched Little Apples was this stripe that I had originally bought with another project in mind. But I can buy more if I need it, this needed finishing! I machine sewed the binding on – best one yet! And it’s only a little binding – 2″ strips. But I love it. I can see now why Rita at Red Pepper Quilts loves using a stripey binding – so effective and hides crooked stitching quite nicely!
It’s not perfect, but what is?! I love it. AndΒ that’s what matters.

Hey, this is really neat. I’m with you on the mustard-green thing, but it looks great here. And striped bindings are, indeed, awesome! Are you enjoying Japan?

I love the disappearing nine patch! It’s a funny thing with colour – sometimes I’m not keen on the fabrics but the result is fabulous and at the moment I’m working on a card trick quilt that is the other way round. I liked the fabrics – but now I’m not sure I am going to like the quilt!I hope it will be OK when I’ve finished!
