This quilt started over a year ago as one of my first quilting projects after my husband bought me Ellie. I thought I was so clever making a transport quilt for my transport-loving son! And then I found out it’s called an I-spy quilt. But hey, still proud of it! It eventually was tucked away in a WIP pile of pieced blocks, but I continued collecting various transport fabrics as I found them – Spotlight, local quilt stores, fabric swaps. When packing up to move to Japan, I had to bring it all with me so I could finally finish it for him so he could actually use it! And I’ve been able to add more fabric to the range too with some Japanese fabrics, especially the shinkansen (bullet train) one!
To make my original pieced blocks fit, I trimmed them to 5″ tall and cut 5″ charms out of all the other fabrics. I then laid them all out on our dining table which was the pefect size for the quilt as well as being kind on the back. I had a very specific size top to make – it needed to fit the backing.
You can see the quilting – in the ditch around the border and 1/4″ either side of the row seams |
I bought this at the Craft & Quilt Fair last year – I saw it and knew it was the perfect backing for this quilt! Not only was it about the right size for a toddler quilt, but hello, car mat map?! So I needed to make the quilt top fit the backing. Once I had laid it all out and sewn it together, I decided that for once, this non-quilt-border girl would actually add a border. Partly to bring it up to size, partly to tame the busy-ness of the quilt top. And hey, it meant a trip to the fabric store. What. A. Shame.
This light grey transport fabric was perfect – calm grey with more trucks and buses and cars and emergency vehicles! I also decided that seeing how my borders were plenty big and I was making this quilt back to front anyway to suit the backing, why not bring the borders around to the back for the binding?! That and I didn’t know what else to use from my stash and time was running out to get it done for today!
Both kids loved it so much as I was making it. It seems my daughter has caught the transport bug from her brother! It is most definitely my son’s quilt, but I think he might have to share it at times. And despite it being summer here, it of course has had to be used – thankfully last night wasn’t as hot as it has been over the past month! And that’s the first ticked off my FAL list!
**GIVEAWAY NOW CLOSED**
