Welcome to the Block Of The Fortnight in the A Very Merry HST BOF series!
Every second Tuesday I’ll be posting a block pattern to make a Christmas tree decoration.
Today’s block is the Christmas angel!
This block will sadden alternative HSTers – it’s best pieced traditionally to achieve the look! It will also work best if you choose at least 2 different greens for the tree background and 3 different colour values of print fabrics to use. I’ve chosen a light blue, a medium blue (2 prints) and a darker blue.
What you will need
Traditional method:
8 – 4″ squares of background fabric total
2 – 4″ squares of light print fabric (A)
4 – 4″ squares of medium print fabric (B)
2 – 4″ sqaures of dark print fabric (C)
Pair your fabrics up:
2 – green/green (use different green prints)
2 – Fabric A/green
1- Fabric B/Fabric B
1- Fabric B/green
1 – Fabric C/green
1 – Fabric C/Fabric B
Make your fabric pairs into HSTs using the traditional method. Press the seams open and trim your HSTs to 3″ square. Arrange your HSTs like the following image where Fabric A is the ‘head’, Fabric B is the ‘dress’ and Fabric C is for the ‘wings’.
Sew your HSTs into four rows and press the seams in alternating directions.
Sew your rows together, making sure your seams nest together – pin if so inclined! Press the seams open and trim to 10″ if necessary.
And you’re done! Two down, four to go.
If you’ve made a block from this tutorial, please feel free to add it to the Flickr group!
