I am part of a wonderful little paper piecing bee called Wombat Stew. There are 7 of us and each month, we take turns being Queen Wombat and the rest of the group designs a paper pieced block according to the requested specifications. It’s also all from stash, which I love!
I had the privilege of being first Queen Wombat and requested blocks based on Japanese cuisine, providing the above image as inspiration. The sushi mini quilt is by ‘I Love Sushi’ by Artisania. And boy did the ladies come through!!
ย
Fiona made me 2 of the black and white shoji screens; Lara made the rice bowl and little soy sauce bottle; Kristy made the sushi platter; Marieka made the Rising Sun dish and the tea cups and kettle; Jane made the adorable cups of chopsticks; and, Gemma made the delicious gyoza! And look closely – you’ll spot lots of little touches of Kate Spain! Those girls sure know how to spoil me!
Now the tricky part is deciding on a layout and working out how I want to put it all together. It’s going to be a wall-hanging in our kitchen as we have lots of empty wall space. I had originally thought of adding some more shoji, but it’s going to be pretty big as it is… I’m letting it stew for a little bit before deciding. Ha. Ha.
This month, Jane is Queen Wombat and has asked for 10″ x 10″ houses. It’s nerve-wracking designing for the first time in this group! They had all set the standard so high last month, not to mention the houses they’ve come up with so far! But, I decided not to get too fancy and fiddly with the designing, and came up with Little Red’s Cottage. I knew I had wanted to feature Little Red in a window from the very beginning, and use some of my Sevenberry Apples for a tree. The one other stipulation was to use selvage numbers 3 and 4 to make the house number ’34’ and I thought it would look cute on the door. Other than that, I just sorta made it up as I designed it.
But I’m not 100% happy with it. Seems a little… blah and square.ย Especially compared to the other houses made by the group! And the idea of smoke from the chimney just looks like a geyser to me! But Jane says she likes it, and that’s what matters. Although I still reserve the right to tweak the pattern and try again for myself, and then if I’m happy with it, I’ll pop it in my Craftsy store!

Those Wombat Stew blocks are just amazing. So is your house! I’m thinking I need to make one for the back of the Summersville quilt I have planned.

Love your sushi blocks. What about some thin black sashing, sort of reminiscent of japanese paper screens? Whatever you do I’m sure it will be great!
