Welcome to the Block Of The Fortnight in the A Very Merry HST BOF series!
Every second Tuesday I have posted a block pattern to make a Christmas tree decoration.
Today we’re talking sashing!
Feel free to sash, join, quilt your blocks as you like, but I wanted to share a tutorial for how I’m sashing my Christmas blocks – sashing with style!
What you will need
17 – 2″ x 10.5″ white strips
68 – 2″ x 2″ print squares
12 – 2″ x 2″ white squares
Draw a line across the diagonal on the wrong side of a print square. Lay it right side down at the bottom of a strip.
Sew along the line, and trim the corner off a 1/4″ from your seam. Make sure you’re cutting on the side of the seam opposite from the strip! Open and press the seam towards the print.
Draw the diagonal line on another print square, and lay it right side down on top of your strip like the following image. I’ve offset it just for the photo so you can see which way the line is compared to the strip and print triangle. Make sure your square aligns with the bottom edge of the strip and the white side remaining.
Sew, trim and press as with the first print square. Repeat for the other end of the strip. Repeat for each strip!
Arrange your blocks and sashing strips. Along the horizontal sashing, join the strips with a 2″ white square like the following image:
Join all the sashing and blocks and you will see little stars – full or part – appear at the corners for a pop of interest and colour!
If you’ve made sashing from this tutorial, please feel free to add it to the Flickr group!
Sidenote – if you don’t feel like drawing 68 lines on the backs of the print squares and you’re confident in your ability to sew a straight line without the guide, go for it! I didn’t, and as long as the bottom edge and the “white side” are aligned, you’re good to go! If it’s a slightly wonky line, it just makes for slightly wonky stars, which are, like, totally cool right now!

Thank you for posting these great instructions! I’ve been wanting to learn how to make this type of sashing but wasn’t sure how to find the directions. Thanks a bunch! 🙂 🙂
