I recently signed up for my first Craftsy class – Crochet Lab. I have always wanted to learn how to do it, especially since seeing an old friend (literally and time-wise) sitting there just whipping her way through granny squares. Literally – her fingers were a blur! I’m a Craftsy affiliate – if you aren’t, you should be! Maybe you’re not interested in putting ads on your blog, and that’s cool, but every now and then you get special affiliate offers. Like the chance to sign up for a free class. Hence Crochet Lab!
It was perfect timing, as I need a good couch project now that it’s getting colder and darker and my sewing room less welcoming at night times. Plus the whole always-wanted-to-learn thing, and cheap supplies for practising from the 100 yen shops. So, a ball of cheap, nasty yarn and a 6.0 hook later…
Yup, nothing fantastic, note the very non-rectangular shape of the bottom piece! I also have no idea WHAT I want to make from crochet. I started a new ball of lovely Tasmanian wool, and I’m thinking maybe a basic scarf for my daughter? If she’ll even keep it on…
Much more square! So far… I did 5 rows of double crochet, and am now doing some single. Just makin’ it up as I go!
I don’t know how many of you have done a Craftsy class before, but I’m loving it. As someone who can’t get to a “physical class” anywhere nearby for language reasons, let alone making the time to go to a class at nights or on weekends so my husband can look after the kids, I love the fact that I can just watch the next video during an afternoon naptime. I’ve been watching them whilst doing the dishes!
All Craftsy classes are set up so that you can pause the video to make a “video note” – whether it’s something you want to ask the instructor, or something to remember for later – or “ask a question” on the sidebar for everyone to see and answer. You can share your projects as you go for feedback or showing off; you can rewatch videos; you have access to class materials – for Crochet Lab that’s a whole bunch of beginner patterns and cheat notes for reading patterns and explaining the terminology.
The best part? Once you’ve signed up and paid, you’re in that class for life. You can rewatch the videos as many times as you like, you will always have access to the class materials, you can always ask questions, etc.
So why am I sharing all this now? Because they have a huge Black Friday sale on right now! All Craftsy classes are now $19.95 or less. For some classes that’s a saving of up to 50%!
Alongside of Craftsy’s class sale, I’ve also put my Craftsy patterns on sale too! Just click the pattern picture to go to the pattern. Ornamental is still $3.50 for the Sew Seasonal blog hop, and Totoro is just $3.00 until Monday!

I’ve been wondering about the Craftsy class experience, so I’m glad you shared! Maybe I’ll have to take a look.
As to crocheting…oh, I love it. I really do. I crochet a lot of hats, and they are just so much fun!

Good for you Alyce. I could never make my squares the same size but I love crocheting.

Great first attempts! I can see how the Craftsy classes would be really useful. There are a couple quilting classes that I want to take. Thanks for the additional insight into the class structure!
