Welcome to the final week of the Let’s Get Acquainted blog hop!!
How long have you been quilting?
I’ve only been quilting just over year, but haven’t looked back! I’ve always been creative, but it’s been through quilting that I’ve found my creative home!
Favorite quilting tip
I love making HSTs the alternative way whenever I can for patterns as it’s much more fabric efficient, and I love my little Clover finger presser – perfect for pressing seams on the go!
Favorite blogging tip
I would have to say, other than the tutorial further down, is make your pictures the full width of your blog post so that we can all see the details of your sewing properly without squinting!
Favorite fabric
Long time followers know of my Spain-addiction to all things Kate Spain, and then there’s Art Gallery Fabrics due to their incredible softness and rich colours! As for specific ranges, I’m currently crushing on Cuzco, Vintage Modern and Marmalade! Which I suppose goes to show that Bonnie & Camille are also a top favourite designer!
Favorite craft book
I have very few craft books… and they’re all packed up back in Australia! But I won Elizabeth Hartmann’s ‘The Practical Guide To Patchwork’ last year and I really enjoyed it! Very well written with great pictures, diagrams and info.
Favorite books
One of my all time favourites is Gone With The Wind, and the official sequel, Scarlett, is just as good! My mum also has this old book called Bet Your Boots I Can that I loved when I was younger, and still occasionally borrow to read again!
Favorite children’s book
Ooh boy… I was an avid reader when I was a kid – still would be if I had time! I loved pretty much all of Enid Blyton’s books, especially The Magic Faraway Tree books, St Claire’s and… oh no, the other boarding school series! Mental blank! I also read as many Nancy Drew books as I could, and Asterix and Obelix comic books, and any ballet fiction or nonfiction…
Favorite quilting tool
The aforementioned Clover finger presser. And I recently bought a retractable tape measure from the Fat Quarter Shop that has both inches and centimetres – In. Love.
Favorite music to listen to while quilting
I rarely listen to music whilst quilting. Partly because when I sew the most is during naptime, and instead I savour the “silence” of no kids’ voices or toy noises! But Josh Groban and Brooke Fraser are long-time favourites I listen to over and over again.
Binding – by hand or by machine?
Sigh. Binding is my least favourite part of quilting. I first started by hand, but was so painfully slow that I tried machine binding. Was going well until recently when a couple of really bad bindings/unpickings/hand binding anyway has convinced me to try hand binding next time. Especially now that it’s getting colder in my sewing room and I need some good couch projects!
If I’d only known – what you wish you knew about blogging before you started your blog…
I’ve only be blogging here for a few months, but I’ve been blogging for a few years now, and I’m still learning! My most recent “trick” is how to share photos from Flickr and still keep the caption and links, like in yesterday’s Yokohama Quilt Festival post. Saved having to re-caption them all with the quilter’s names!
And how? Well that’s my tutorial for you today!
Go to the Flickr photo you want to share in your blog post, and click ‘Share.
Click ‘Grab the HTML/BBCode’ option, then select ‘BBCode’. Copy the text in the box, and go to the BBCode to HTML website.
Paste the text into the box, choose ‘Links open in new window’ if you want that to happen (rather than people leaving your blog to follow the link), and click ‘Convert BBCode to HTML’.
Copy the text and go to your blog post. Now, I suggest you type PIC in the blog post where you want the picture to be – I centre it too so that my photo sits centred in my blog post, add the spacing before and after.
Go to HTML and scroll down until you find PIC – I’ve highlighted it for you to see – and then replace that with the your copied text.
Go back to Compose and you will see it there!
And in real life? Here it is:
You can edit the text – you can see that I italicise mine. You could make it smaller, bold, on the left, on the right… whatever you like!
So there you go! I’ll admit it is a lot of copy/paste/clicks when doing a photo heavy post like yesterday’s post, but for a photo or two, it’s worth it!

Thanks for the tutorial, Alyce. And I LOVED your post about the Quilt Festival (I’m catching up on my blog reading, so this is a combo comment). I don’t know how you could pick ONE favorite – what stunning achievements those quilts are, and how incredible it must have been to see them in real life. Thanks, too, for sharing about yourself in the Get Acquainted!

The “other” series is Mallory Towers! (Which was by far the better one. But that’s not really on the quilting topic… 😛 )
