I’ve shared my Secret Santa gift from Kristy, but I’ve had to wait to share what I made for my Secret Santa partner as she was away over Christmas and only just got home! The audacity! I scored the beautiful Marieka from Bespoke Bites.
She had mentioned that something organisational and functional for her sewing space would be much appreciated as she’s mid-move to South Australia. Mid-move meaning she’s living in a furnished rental whilst most of their belongings are container-ed up and sent south! So something pretty and useful would be good as she is missing half her stuff! After a quick stalk of her Pinterest boards, I came across the perfect idea that I myself had already Pinned to try sometime…
A fabric basket! We were able to ask a few questions to the group so that amongst the responses, our Secret Santa partner would provide us some clues. I asked what kind of Japanese fabrics my partner likes and Marieka listed Echino birds as an example. Now, it isn’t actually Echino, but it definitely is Japanese and has the same kind of feel about it. And it’s in purple!
I used the famous tutorial by Ayumi from Pink Penguin to make this. Oh my word, so quick, so easy! Especially as I wasn’t making patchwork sides. I used a pink washi tape fabric, also a cotton linen blend, for the contrasting fabric, so along with a layer of flannel in between, it holds itself up nicely. It would make a great scraps bastket! I wrapped it up in a Christmas fat quarter along with some scraps and bits and pieces and tied it with some twill ribbon, and sent it on its merry way!
In fact, I fell in love with the design so much, I made another one for my local playgroup’s Secret Santa. It was a put-a-present-in-the-pool-pick-one-out kinda deal, so I don’t know who ended up with! I hope they liked it as much as Marieka likes her’s!

That is a sweet idea to have something nice for Marieka as she has boxed away most of her life for a year. I may be tempted to make one of these myself now that I hear it was an easy pattern.

Oh awesome. I adore those fabrics you’ve chosen. And yes to that Pink Penguin tutorial – I just used it as well to make a fabric basket for my friend who is having a new bub.
How do you find fabric and haberdashery shopping over there? I imagine there is a lot of fabric awesomeness, but is it expensive? Is there much you struggle to get? (Hurrah for etsy and online shopping though!)If you ever need anything from Aus, let me know!
