I know each quilt you make is your favourite, but I’m going to say it anyway – this Totoro baby quilt is my most favourite quilt ever! I had so much fun planning it, and while he’s a little different from my original plan and I had a few cutting errors and thread snapping errors while making it, I’m so thrilled with the outcome.
And who is Totoro? Possibly the most popular Japanese movie character ever! Well-known around the world, Totoro is a super cute forest spirit who helps two little girls.
The Hello Kitty Liberty blossoms, the mix of greens, the dogwood quilting. The perfect mixture of low volume browns and wood grain quilting. Totoro’s free motion quilted eyes. The lucky cats eating sushi and onigiri for the backing. Even the binding is the perfect shade of grey with a touch of red for some interest.
And all those 2″ finished squares? Barely a mismatched seam. This was one of those quilts where I finally felt like I was growing as a quilter by getting such consistent accuracy. Gosh, between finally feeling like my stash is useful for pulling the colours I need, to feeling like I can actually piece well, I’m feeling like quite the quilting adult now!
I used a mixture of half-rectangle triangles and strips to put most of Totoro together, and paper piecing to help get those tummy strips and his eyes nicely shaped, before filling in the eye detail with free motion quilting in black.
Stats:
Finished size: 45″ x 50″
Fabrics: Not all known, but includes Sketch Sky (sky), Sketch Charcoal (Totoro), Toy Pop Collection (backing), Little Apples (binding); Tree – Oval Elements, Etchings, In My Room, Grand Hotel; Leaves – Pearl Bracelets, Field Study, Super Fly, Mod Basics Moroccan Lattice, homespun solid, homespun spots, Hello Kitty Liberty
Quilting: 100% cotton batting; Dogwood quilting for the leaves, woodgrain for the tree, loopy scribbles for the sky, in the ditch outlining Totoro
I’ll share some more detail quilting photos and stories later in the week, to save overloading this post with photos! And for those who I know will ask or who already have, I will not be making an official pattern for this quilt – a pixel tree and quilt is easy enough to make up yourself! But I will share how I pieced Totoro and the paper piecing templates later this week too.
