A friend of my aunt’s is expecting her first baby – a little girl baby! She requested a cot quilt, bunting and a name cushion in pink and purple, and if possible, to include some rabbits. That’s a cute request!
I suggested a few different fabric ranges that included some good pinks and purples, and she settled on Giggles by Me And My Sister. I also suggested adding a third colour for balance and we agreed on green. I used the deep teal green from Giggles and pulled a few other fabrics from my stash including the perfect shade of Oval Elements. To include some rabbits, I used a layer cake of the pink colorway of Windsor Hill by Bunny Hill Designs. I also found some Deb Strain purple prints locally that were a great addition.
The quilt was great fun to pull together. I spent longer arranging the fabrics than chain piecing it all together, but I love me some colour play so that was fine by me! It was also the second project recently where I felt like I was good at this quilting thing thanks to some fantastically consistent matching seams across the quilt! I also love the simple diagonal grid of quilting. The cozy texture it adds is just heavenly! Not to mention super quick for a baby quilt. Now I really want to make a simple patchwork quilt in my size with this quilting design just for me!
The bunting was nice and quick using my Creative Grids Equilateral Triangle ruler. Just cut, sew triangles together, make the binding tape and sew together again. I spent more time pressing the binding tape then I did sewing it all – I hate pressing binding! And just look at that sweet little pair of bunnies front and centre!
The name cushion was admittedly a little nervewracking. I haven’t appliqued since high school, and it was actually hard to hunt down the fusible paper around here! Eventually a shop assistant found a small packet in a corner with very discrete labelling. After all that, it was also easily finished in a day and even the curves on the S weren’t too scary. I used some Art Gallery for the front and backing and added some light quilting to the front to make it more secure and plush. Making it from “overseas”, it was hard to decide what size to make the pillow, but in the end I went with an Ikea pillow size as I know that they’re an international size and also available locally to my client.
