Last year, I made two sets of bags – one for a friend and one for Jonathan. This year, the list is up to 4 sets so far! A fellow Aussie expat has her two sons starting this year and hired me to make all their bags and bits that they need, plus a work colleague’s son’s stuff and Isabelle’s too! My deal is that they choose and buy all the supplies, and then I charge per bag/set of items. It’s always fun seeing what fabrics they choose!
I’ve now got the construction method down pat. I get into a production mode – put on my tunes, cut everything, make organised piles of fabric and coordinating thread, sew through each fabric set of bags… The final thing I do is thread all the drawstrings. Metres and metres of the stuff!
Japanese preschools require a variety of bags, with each preschool requiring different amounts, types and sizes! For these boys, they needed a large sports clothes bag, a smaller spare clothes bag and a book bag (those are in the prequilted fabric), and a bento bag and a cup bag in the cotton fabric. The next set I have to make includes an apron/smock/thing, a cooking hat and a cloth face mask! Never a dull moment in my sewing room…

How fascinating. I didn’t know they require that much. They are beautiful bags. You must reminded me I need to make my son a library bag.

I expect the demand will increase even more when all the Mums see those!

This is a crazy lot of stuff they need! You’ve made them look fabulous! I don’t envy you with the drawstrings though. By the way, we are big lovers of Japan over here. My hubby lived there for over two years and always has nice things to say about his stay. I can’t wait to visit some day!

It can be hard sometimes, to find good boy fabric. These are great. I especially like the black space fabric.
