I’ve been sharing some progress pictures of this pillow cover on Instagram over the past week, as I’ve has some fun experimenting and trying out some new free motion quilting. It is seriously so much fun gettin’ my FMQ on for a small project like this! No giant roll of quilt to drag around… But that’s not the point of this post! When the issue first hit the online newstand, I shared a bit about my regular contributions to Make Modern, and now I’m joining in Make Modern’s blog hop for Issue 1 to share some behind the scenes info for my contributions.
This block is actually a test block from the first installment of the Aurora starry sampler quilt. But it’s far too pretty to just sit in a pile of UFO blocks! A cushion cover is the perfect project for using up spare quilt blocks lying around. I used 3 prints from Kokka’s new Irome collection, and a creamy golden Botanics leaf print for the background and it practically glows in the sunlight!
The actual Aurora quilt is being made in Horizon by Kate Spain with Bella Steel – many thanks to Kate Spain and Moda for supplying me with advanced yardage! The Aurora pattern is all about playing with colours and print saturation, and Horizon is perfect for this with many glorious shades of colour. I am particularly a huge fan of the teal Oceans colourway… droooooling!
My favourite part of this whole quilt is that this starry sampler had been sitting in one of my first sketchbooks already coloured in blues and greens and purples as inspired by the Aurora Borealis. So when I saw previews of Kate’s latest line, Horizon, I may or may not have squealed rather loudly at just how perfect this fabric was for the Aurora quilt. She was inspired by seaglass, but still, thank you Kate for reading my mind!
You can see a preview of the first issue so you can have a flick through just like you would at the shops, and check out the Make Modern shop to buy your issues and subscriptions. If you make anything from it, don’t forget to tag #makemodern on Instagram so we can see it!
