(Alternative title: Best Laid Plans)
This Cotton + Steel voile finally arrived last week. Four yard of it to make a dress for the first time. And it’s on a black background, not navy, like I had thought! And the light blue voile solid is blue, not aqua, to match the C+S print (although it photographs similar) and thus won’t work for a belt/waist tie! And of course now I don’t like the navy voile solid for the waist band! And oh my plans!
I managed to talk myself out of my disappointedness and back into being excited about making my dress, threw the fabric in the wash… and hurt my shoulder.
September was going to be a sewing power month. Bee blocks, a dress, a quilt, a birthday present, a cushion… But over the weekend, I hurt my shoulder. Doing exercise. Oh the ironies – trying to strengthen my body and instead I break it! I have always had a weaker right shoulder. I grew too quickly and the muscles didn’t strengthen properly and just never have caught up. Add to that the fact that being tall, 5’11” or 179cm, means that I have a slightly slouchy posture – apparently we tend to slouch slightly to make you shortstacks feel more comfortable not stick out so much. So my right shoulder has always been prone to getting stiff and sore and tired after a lot of use, like quilting for long periods of time. A good massage fixes that, but this time it’s the joint that’s affected – the weak muscles aren’t holding the joint properly/tight enough. Not so bad it’s dislocating or anything! Just that they can’t support the joint as much as normal. At least, that’s what my husband and I managed to understand via half English/half Japanese/half charades-and-anatomy-poster-pointing with the physio communicated!
So while I think I will still be able to sew some quilt blocks and small projects, I can’t crawl around the floor pinning and cutting dress patterns, nor wrangling large amounts of background fabric for the quilt. Hopefully the drugs and patches and exercises and physio appointments will fix me up super quickly, and by the time I see the shoulder specialist in a few weeks, I’m all good again!

So sorry!! There are many strengthening exercises for shoulders…my husband knows them intimately, if you need any more suggestions!!! And on the bright side, those fabrics are still wonderful, even if you don’t use them together! Hope your recovery is short and sweet!

Uugh – so sorry. Hope you can enjoy working on some little projects instead, and heal up quickly.

Oh you poor thing! You have all my sympathy as a someone who is finally starting to be able to use her shoulder again. Just think of all the Pinterest time you’ll have to gather project ideas!

Ouch! Your poor shoulder!

Oh Alyce! Yikes! I hope you feel better soon. Also, I have some Free Spirit Voile in Seafoam and it is the perfect aqua (ah-qua) match for C+S, I’m actually using it to line a dress I’m making out of one of the prints from Mustang! I know fabric is much more expensive to ship to Japan, but I feel like it’s worth it for a whole garment!
Oh, and as a short person, I’ve definitely hurt my feet trying to wear tall heels to catch up to all you lovely tall people…the grass is always greener, right?!

Haha! I love how you Americans say aqua 😀 I will have to hunt that one down, thanks for the tip!! If I can get it from a tiered-shipping shop, then it would be worth it, yes – I’d only need a half yard or so, I think. Maybe a yard if I added it as the waistband… Hmm, I will have to have a play! And yes, the grass is always greener! My husband likes that I’m tall so he doesn’t have to hurt his neck kissing me, lol!
