For September’s Wombat Stew block, Marieka asked for any of these blocks with a dark grey or black background and rainbow bright prints. I chose the Icky Thump block because I could see some fun potential for playing around with colour placement. It wasn’t until I was right at the end that I realised the sections had printed a little bit smaller – there were no special printing instructions, so I just printed as normal for paper piecing (actual size, no scaling). And as the outer seam allowance measured 1/4″, I didn’t notice anything. So instead of being 12.5″, it’s more like 11.75″. Thankfully Marieka was more than happy for me to just pop a border on, although it is a quick block to piece so I would have been happy to redo it. So instead of a normal border, I decided to make it partial seam border to match the spinny effect of the block.
UPDATE: The pattern designer has confirmed that the block isn’t actually a full 12″ block, so I did it right after all!

That is a very cute block and the partial seam border really does echo and tie in nicely with the block.

What a great block! I love paper piecing of course except for the mess I make.

It looks fabulous. A whole quilt of these would be quite trippy I’d imagine.

I would call this block sophisticated. It really is beautiful.

Nicely done!

I love the block, but what an odd size. I would have thought as you did – that I had misprinted. I guess it doesn’t matter what size when the end result is fab.
