Welcome to this week’s instalment for the Bright Sky QAL! It’s definitely not too late to join in if you want to, it’s a quick quilt to piece! Last week we pieced our centre stars, and this week’s Bright Sky quilt task is to piece the outer star sections! These are a little fiddly, but definitely quick and achievable!
As you would have found, there are 2 different options for cutting and piecing the background triangles in regards to where you have your bias edges. Option A means that you will be sewing seams on the straight edge, but will have a bias edge on the outside of your quilt. Option B means sewing the bias edge but having a straight edge on the outside. It’s all personal choice – for my first quilt, I did Option B and had the straight edge on the outside as I was having it professionally quilted and didn’t want to have to worry about how that might annoy or bother Gemma! For this quilt, I have gone for Option A as my background fabric has a bit of bias stretch happening, so I would rather baste well and square it up carefully than deal with wonky seams in my quilt!
I want to really highlight this part of the pattern – when you’re sewing the background triangles to the print squares, you need to make sure this corner is a straight edge like this. The other corner of the background triangle will overhang and that’s great. That gives you the outer edge seam allowance for your binding at the end! You will also have overhang on both corners with the print star triangles which is good too, just make sure they’re even on both ends. Final pointer – pin pin pin. I’m not normally a pinner when sewing seams, but when they’re long, and especially on the bias (we sew the print triangles along the bias edge), I pin. If you like to use starch, now’s the time to use that too!
Next week we’ll be attaching the sections all together to the centre star and piecing the backing. So make sure you’ve got your backing fabric ready – I’ll be shopping at Nippori with Ms Midge on Wednesday for mine!
