The final task I needed to tick off my sewing list this year was my Disney Quilt Swap mini. My partner didn’t provide loads of information to go on, other than that she’s obsessed with Disney and visits Disneyland every year for Valentines Day. Once I got over the stress/pressure of trying to work out what to make with such little guidelines, I decided that this instead meant she would be happy with anything Disney! So I decided to use my Fairy Tale Castle pattern and adapt it to become Cinderella’s castle. Until I realised that Disneyland USA actually has Sleeping Beauty’s castle! But that’s even more fun, because of the greys and pinks and gold I could play with instead of just white.
As with all my paper piecing blocks, choosing the fabrics is my favourite part of the whole thing!! Especially realising that the gold/mustard print from Botanics by Carolyn Friedlander was the perfect print to use for the gold accents on Sleeping Beauty’s castle! Also Botanics for the grey stone wall, with some Alison Glass was perfect for the gate/entrance and a Simply Color leaf print was fitting for the coat of arms (originally a window in the pattern).
I chose the 3 pink prints based on the colours working together to gradually lighten moving up the castle, but when I was cutting into them, I realised they are actually vine/floral prints, which… I mean, hello?! Aurora’s castle covered in vines?! The darker pink is Blush by Bonnie & Camille, Floral Elements by AGF is the mid-pink and the lightest is a Japanese fabric from November’s Japanese Colour Club bundle. The Jeni Baker window print was originally intended for the roof, but the Angela Walter’s print worked better, and I realised that it works well for the windows instead! Finally, the sky. Probably my favourite part of it all, being an older AGF print and matches the pinks and golds perfectly from the castle, plus, fireworks! It’s going to be hard to send it off. And I’m not just saying that for the sake of it! It’s really, actually true – I don’t have anymore of the sky fabric left, so I can’t remake it for myself. So I truly hope the recipient adores it as much as I do!
And with that, I’m signing off live-blogging for the rest of the year! I have family arriving on Sunday, and more on Wednesday, for two weeks. I do have a few posts scheduled as a part of a holiday blog post swap I’m participating in from the Quilty Bloggers & Instagrammers Support group where a bunch of us have filled out questionnaires to swap around. So there’s still some blog reading to entertain us in the quiet moments of this busy period! But otherwise, I shall see you on Instagram a bit or back here in January, especially on Monday January 5th for an exciting new, year-long series!

I’m sure your partner will be delighted with the castle – whether it be Cinderella or Sleeping Beauty. It will be a tiny bit of Disneyland in her home. I hope you enjoy your time with family, and have a break from your normal routine over Christmas and New Year. I’ve been granted a reprieve because my Christmas visitors just cancelled last night (due to a family illness) so now I have 5 free days at home with just our immediate family! Merry Christmas, and thank you for all the help and support you have shared during 2014.

I saw the fireworks straightaway. I love this castle block.
One day my prince will come … and I will sew a castle block. (It is on my list for future humidicrib quilts.)

This turned out so great. The firework fabric is awesome. I’m a bit sad that I can tell from your description that it isn’t headed my way. ๐
