I’ve never been the kind of quilter who just plows through one project at a time and churning out finishes – I’m always dabbling here and there… the pile of WIPs can attest to that! Likewise, I’m not the kind of blogger who shares regular lists of WIPs, which means sometimes I look back and feel like I haven’t been sharing much of what I’ve been making. At least, not on the blog, anyway, because Instagram (@blossomheartquilts) and the Facebook page share a lot more of the daily goings-on of my sewing space! Admittedly, there also hasn’t been too much sewing lately as I’ve been working on the computer a lot over this past month, but anyway, here’s what has been worked on!
Melissa contacted me a few weeks ago asking if I’d like to participate in a group for Collaborate For A Cause to help make a quilt. Which resulted in 18 checkerboard quilt blocks (tutorial by Red Pepper Quilts), using 2.5″ strips of scraps and Emma Louise solid in Vanilla, and there’s the 288 pieces. Although I misread the instructions and precut my strips when they were sewn in pairs, and not in the groups of 4! Way to double my workload! But they did come together pretty quickly, and the process was soothingly methodical. Definitely keeping this pattern in mind for a scrappy quilt should I ever make one for myself! I’ve also never used that brand of solids before (nor heard of it!) but it was a beautiful fabric to work with! Solid fabrics can range hugely in quality, and this stuff is good – soft but not slippery, and a close weave so it’s easy to cut and sew.
There’s also been some swap sewing… and major screwing up! This snapshot from the weekend showed my progress for the latest round of #makeyourplannercuterswap making the Organizer Wallet by LBG Studio. Easy enough, quick enough… until you get to the final step of turning it out and realise you used an interfacing that is waaaay too stiff and stitches pop and you can’t close the seam and so you try to add some “artfully placed” binding and it all just goes to shhhhhh… There may have even been actual tears involved, because perfectionist. So that’s been this week’s job – to buy lighter interfacing and remake it.

I have used Emma Louise. I adore the feel of the fabric but find transparency can be a problem sometimes. Did you find that?
The curse of the wrong interfacing. I have a half-sewn project in a bag. It has been there since October. I have to start again from the beginning as I used the wrong interfacing. It is far too stiff. My fault, but so discouraging.

No, I didn’t. I mean, white fabric is white and transparent to an extent anyway, lol, but I didn’t notice anything particular!

I never use to be one who had WIP’s. I start a project and finished it before going on to the next. Funny how that has now changed and I have a pile laying around! Love the checkerboard quilt. Those always turn out to be beautiful! I hope you find the right interfacing…after all that work, its a shame you have to do it over!
Alyce says
Found it and re-made it much better, yay!
That Crafty Cara says
“…because perfectionist.” That made me laugh. Sorry about your interfacing troubles!

*dorky grin* Yep, it’s true!
