This month we have a second guest host, because I’m currently enjoying some beautiful family time with visitors!
Hey y’all! I’m Joy, Alyce’s guest blogger for Sew Cute Tuesday. I’m regularly blogging at quilty joyjoy about my misadventures in homemaking, quilting, and living with multiple sclerosis. My mama taught me how to make a quilt on an old Singer Featherweight when I was four years old. With all the wonderful notions and tools, things have certainly gotten easier since my lessons that involved cutting templates out of leftover cereal boxes with scissors.
2015 was the year that I broke my number one cardinal rule: Never Quilt for a Quilter. Now no one ever told me never to quilt for other quilters, but I definitely worried they’d notice my varying seam allowances, inconsistent stitches, and any other self-perceived flaw in my quilts. I decided that I’d get over that fear by challenging myself to enter some mini quilt and craft swaps. As a result, I’ve become fairly addicted to Instagram and the endless availability of swaps to suit any heart’s desire – you can find me on Instagram as @quilty_joyjoy.
My favorite mini quilts to work on involve thread sketching and multimedia art. I like working in this medium because I have infinite possibilities of what I will create. I really enjoy these because I can tailor my mini quilt to my partner’s request and make a one-of-a-kind mini quilt. I’ve learned that the best swaps for this type of quilting are anything that make the nerdiest of hearts go pitter-pat. In the near future, I have projects in the works for several fandom swaps, such as Star Wars and Firefly. Personally, I’m always on the hunt for any Pride and Prejudice swaps, because I can swoon over Mr. Darcy like the best of them. Some of my most recent finishes include a mini quilt for a fan of The Avengers.
I’ve also been a swap angel (creating something for someone whose partner didn’t send a package) for the #80s90scraftswap. I made my partner a Cabbage Patch Kid mini quilt.
I’m currently working on a project for a fan of the Chicago Blackhawks hockey team. This one isn’t for a swap but I am having a lot of fun creating it. I can’t wait to see the look on my friend’s face when I deliver the finished mini quilt! You will have to keep an eye out on Instagram or my blog to see the finished quilt.
Now the last picture I have to share with you is my most recent finish of the bunch. I just mailed out a mini quilt with a thread sketch painting of The Last Unicorn. (I loved this movie growing up. My brothers, sister, and I probably wore out the VHS tape we had.) In all honesty, I loved how this quilt turned out and wanted to be a selfish quilter, tuck it away to keep for myself, and make something else to send. However, in the end, I dropped it in the mail and I can’t wait to see what my swap partner thinks of it. It is definitely one of my favorite mini quilts that I’ve made.
I definitely have several more quilts in the works, not to mention a bunch of swap commitments to fulfill soon. I’m also putting together a little tutorial on how to make mini quilts using multimedia and thread sketching. Feel free to stop by and see what I’m up to at quilty joyjoy or you can certainly follow along with me @quilty_joyjoy on Instagram. Who knows, maybe while you are browsing Instagram, you’ll find a swap that you just have to enter.
Ok guys, time to link up one of your posts from this week! It could be a finished quilt, or your latest quilting bee blocks, or a cushion, or anything else quilty related. And did you know you can link directly to an Instagram pic too?! So if you want to link from there, you can do that too – link up as normal, and use #sewcutetuesday and @blossomheartquilts and @quilty_joyjoy on IG to help us find you from there too.

Thank you so much! I am in the process of writing a tutorial series on how I make my quilts. I hope to finish it soon, but I seem to get distracted with more projects and less writing. However, keep an eye out in the near future and I might have a little cheat sheet series if you are interested.

Love your mini quilts. I would have been tempted to keep The Last Unicorn one was well. I just might have to give thread painting a try.
