And that’s week 2, done and dusted! Betty and Caroline are this week’s blocks, and my first official blog post for the sew along was posted this week – how to make the Betty block with normal HSTs!
Caroline
Oooh, definitely one of most favourite blocks… because it’s my favourite colour of fabric to use! And once again, I pieced the half-square triangles and quarter-square triangles (QSTs) using the normal method of piecing them. I used the alternative HST method for both sets of half-square triangles to create 4 at a time, and the QST chart from my book to make the quarter-square triangles to the right size.

Letter – When I Behold the Heavens
I truly love space, of the heavenly outer variety. Living in outer Tokyo, there’s far too much light at night for us to see much of the night sky. Having come from a small city in Australia, where you could even see the Milky Way from the darker patches of the suburbs, I miss the night sky! I also experienced snow for the first time here in Japan, so for this letter, all I kept saying was, “Hey, I notice these wonders!”, haha!

Do you have any tricks for getting the points to lay (fairly) flat, particularly in the parts where 8 pieces of fabric are meeting in the middle? Or is a bit of bulk to be expected? Thanks!
Alyce says
There’s always going to be bulk with that many seams, yes. There is a method to “spin” the seams, but I’ve never sat down to wrap my head around that method. Google should be able to help with that!
