At last, I finished month 2’s blocks for my Farmer’s Wife 1930s Sampler Quilt! Thankfully month 3 was only a handful of blocks and a few weeks off, so I was able to catch up and am now up to date. But first, let’s round out month 2…
Grandma
I was originally thinking about rotary cutting and piecing Grandma, until I realised that was just asking for trouble. So I paper pieced her, and I have no regrets. Pre-cut the pieces, and then stitch away. Well, once I’d carefully noted on the templates which print went where, because she’s wearing a complex dress, this chick!

Nancy
Oh Nancy, your summery daisy frock just makes me smile! I contemplated using the Marti Mitchell templates for this one, but just went for my comfort zone of paper piecing. And the accuracy of this one makes me smile too!

Hello Kitty: Hiroshima okonomiyaki

Sara
Sara was a splash of cool water after the rich yellows of the last two blocks. I used the Marti Mitchell templates for this one, fussy cutting a little, and now regretting just cutting up whatever for one of the templates, resulting in that random “splash” in the bottom corner… I may replace it, we’ll see how I feel at the end of the block-making process.

Once again, your fabric choices are stunning. Here in the States it’s winter, and in Minnesota we are going to be below 0 degrees F. for the high this weekend, so the warm colors of Grandma and Nancy are really welcome! Are you considering changing that one piece on Sara?

As you collect more blocks, I am intrigued by how you plan to lay them out in the end. They seem to lend themselves to a colourwash layout as each block has such low contrast. Yes? No? Maybe?
