You know me, I rarely, if ever, make quilts I didn’t design myself, purely because that’s my favourite part of quilting! Which means I make very selective choices about what books I buy. You’d also think that with an international move in a couple of weeks that I’d have not gotten any while in the US last month… well, you’d be wrong. Waaay wrong. Over the next few weeks, I’ll take you on a little tour of some of the quilting books I own and explain just why I did buy them and give you a bit of a review of why I like them, but for now, here’s a snapshot of the latest editions!
The Modern Medallion Workbook: 11 Quilt Projects to Make, Mix & Match by Janice Zeller Ryan and Beth Vassalo // Yes, the Janice of Better Off Thread that I stay with in LA every year for QuiltCon! Of course I had to have her book. She was also my roomie (and bed-mate for 3 of 4 nights!), hence what she signed.
Patchwork Essentials: The Half-Square Triangle: Foolproof Patterns and Simple Techniques from Basic Blocks by Jeni Baker // Jeni was one of the first quilt bloggers I found, and quickly fell in love with her style. I also love HSTs, so that one was a no-brainer purchase.
The Appliqué Book: Traditional Techniques, Modern Style – 16 Quilt Projects by Casey York // I got her first book last year at QuiltCon when she taught my applique class, and she’s also been a wonderful friend and support, so I just had to get her second one too!
Quilting From Every Angle: 16 Geometric Designs by Nancy Purvis // There were several quilts that I absolutely loved at QuiltCon, and almost all of them were made by just a handful of different quilters. Nancy was one of those quilters whom I kept seeing on the labels of quilts I loved, so I just had to get the book from which many of them are in!
As all the authors were also at QuiltCon, I was able to get them all signed too! Which is always a bit fun.
And yes, Janice did indeed sign, “Thank you for spooning with me” – makes me smile every time I see it! Let me know what you’d like to see more of from each book and I’ll try to include that in my review posts!

the HST one looks very appealing but think you will be telling us all we need to know with the blocks we are dong with you. I have so many quilting books and to be honest some I have not even looked at must make an effort and read learn and inwardly digest them

It’s a beautiful book! I know HSTs and feel very comfortable with them, but always love to learn what others have to say too.

The fact that you don’t buy a lot of books (I don’t either) and you found these helpful, I know I need to check them out. =) The medallian looks very interesting!

Great recommendations! I too own the Jen Bakers book and it’s packed with inspiration! I was too lazy to bring it to quiltcon and carry it around to be signed! LOL!
I’ll be checking out the others on your list and look forward to the reviews. I see my books as another form of inspiration, even if I don’t learn anything (But there always seems to be something I can learn :)). They are still lovely to look at and hold:)

PS….you still remind me of the adorable Daisy from Downton 😜

I just put Quilting from Every Angle on my Amazon wish list, and I already have Jen Baker’s fabulous book. It’s a treat to look through these books and see the gorgeous quilts. Even if I don’t make a quilt from one of the books I buy, I still appreciate the tips I learn from them and the inspiration they give me. A book is almost always money well spent.
