Several of you were pretty keen to hear about The Modern Medallion Workbook, and I’m pretty keen to share it with you! Medallion quilts are something I’m yet to dabble in beyond a couple of play times in EQ7. But they’re something I’m definitely wanting to try soon, once I decide I have the time and effort to commit to working on so many different borders and designs! Or so I thought…
I need to upfront first, and say that one of the authors, Janice Zeller Ryan, is a close quilty friend. However, that doesn’t mean I’m necessarily going to buy your book right in the middle of trying to move countries! Except this book is an exception to that rule, as it was one that I really wanted, so I could save on shipping. I must also share that she gifted me a copy, despite my attempts to pay her. However, this review is still 100% my own – I do not share or recommend products to you guys unless I love them, and this is no exception.
As I mentioned before, I’m wanting to try out a medallion quilt. However, I thought medallion quilts had to be many-layered/bordered, with complex designs. Which look stunning!
But, uhhh, turns out that is completely untrue. They can be very relaxed and chill.
Or not even square at all! How about these stunning curvaceous medallions?
The Modern Medallion Workbook has really opened my eyes to look beyond, well, the box, to what medallion quilts can be. The term ‘border’ can pretty much mean anything! As long as it’s added to a central-ish block to build a quilt from the centre-ish out, that’s a medallion quilt. How freeing is that?! And I also love that Janice and Beth discuss how to logistically and practically make a medallion quilt. There can be a lot of pieces to organise, and they’ve thought through that for you.
Technically speaking, this book is understandably packed full of instructions. But just because it needs to have so many words and numbers, doesn’t mean it can’t still be pretty! I love the little close-ups of the quilts used to adorn the instructional pages of each project.
Alongside Janice and Beth’s quilts, there are also quilts by 9 other talented designers: Alexia Abegg, Karen Anderson-Abraham, Rebecca Bryan, Kerry Green, Erica Jackman, Christina Lane, Melissa Richie, Latifah Saafir, and Amy Sinibaldi. Which means there’s a range of styles and techniques to please anyone, from applique to curves to improv.

I thought about buying this when we were doing our round robins. It would have come in handy as it has lots of interesting ideas.
