Assembling my Little Ruby quilt was so much fun. Playing with colour and layout and gradients of colour, seeing it all come together through the quilt assembly pattern! Finally getting to piece the star blocks, that I worked so hard to make, into rows, and finally a quilt top, was so satisfying.
Some people were wondering how to make this quilt smaller, because using 2 jelly rolls is a big expense. I made my quilt smaller because I didn’t need or want a bigger quilt at this time, but yes, not using 2 jelly rolls was also a perk. I had a rough idea of how I would lay it out, but knowing that I wanted to play with the colours from Blueberry Park in the Bright colourway to get some movement and gradient effect happening, I just sewed up all the strips to give the options for where to place the colours. I then mixed up two different prints to make a pair of half hexies (a whole hexagon), so that I had a good mix of prints and shades of colour throughout the blocks.
I shared this picture last week, but you can see the black outline showing what layout my quilt has ended up as, with 4 half hexagons along the top and bottom.
In the end, my quilt has ended up at about 51″ x 56″. If you wanted to do similar and just use one jelly roll, but wanted it bigger still, you could easily add a border on after trimming it square. I’d suggest using the same background fabric so that you still have the “floating” effect of the swirling hexies, and if you wanted to add some print fabric too, add a second border. Let the star blocks breathe and shine on their own!
Now, to move states this Friday, and get this quilt all quilted and bound before the last posts are due in two weeks!
