Welcome back to the second quarter of the Modern HST Sampler! If this is the first time you’re reading this, fear not, you can join in at anytime. Start with this one or go back to the beginning, it’s up to you. This year, we’re making 24 modern half-square triangle quilt blocks, and by the end of the year, you will not only have a beautiful sampler quilt, but you will have some well-honed HST making skills. If you need more information, you can find out more about:
- The QAL and fabric requirements
- Required and recommended tools
- Tips for HST accuracy
- Frequently Asked Questions
- The rest of the blocks!
This quilt along has been structured so that you slowly ease your way into half-square triangles. We started off with 4″ finished HSTs (4.5″ unfinished), and now we’re tackling 3″ finished HSTs (3.5″ unfinished) for this quarter. We’re still using the same methods of making the half-square triangles – 2 at a time, 4 at a time, and 8 at a time – it’s just that this time the HSTs are a little smaller at 3″ finished (3.5″ unfinished). Rockpool uses all three methods of making HSTs!
Fabrics used from the Modern HST Sampler Kit:
Cotton + Steel Basics Turquoise Sprinkles, Anna Elise Frost Geo Mist,
Blueberry Park Navy Rough Patch, Squared Elements Cielo, Kona Oyster
Rockpool
Fabric Requirements
Print 1 (dark green)
1 – 4″ x 4″ square
Print 2 (light green)

Print 3 (dark blue)
1 – 4″ x 4″ square
Print 4 (light blue)
1 – 4″ x 4″ square
1 – 8″ x 8″ square
Background
1 – 6″ x 6″ square
1 – 8″ x 8″ square
Block should measure 12.5” x 12.5”. Use a 1/4″ seam and press seams toward the darker print, or as directed.
Instructions
Step 1. Pair Print 1 and matching Print 2 and make 2 HSTs. Open the HSTs and press the seam towards the print or darker fabric colour. Trim to 3.5″. Repeat for Print 3 and matching Print 4.
Step 2. Pair remaining Print 2 with a background square and make 4 HSTs. Open the HSTs and press the seam towards the print or darker fabric colour. Trim to 3.5″.
Step 3. Pair Print 4 with a background square and make 8 HSTs. Open the HSTs and press the seam towards the print or darker fabric colour. Trim to 3.5″.
Step 4. Arrange the HSTs to create the Rockpool block layout. Sew the HSTs together to form rows, pressing seams in each row in alternate directions in order to nest seams and reduce bulk. Sew the rows together, pressing the seams open.
Step 5. Press the block, and trim to 12.5” square if necessary, keeping 1/4″ between the outer HST points and the edge of the block.
Quarter 2 Linky Update
Normally, the final tutorial of the quarter means that it’s time for sharing your progress, and with some fun prizes to share too. That will still happen! However, as my husband just moved back from Japan yesterday, and we’re moving interstate next week, and setting up a new home and life back in Australia in a city we’ve never lived in before… The linky is going to happen at the end of July. Thanks for your patience and understanding!
I hope you have fun making Rockpool! You can share them on Instagram using #modernHSTsampler (and feel free to tag me too – @blossomheartquilts!), or in the Blossom Heart Quilts group on Facebook, or even link them up to Sew Cute Tuesday. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to ask in the comments.

Pretty block! When you say in step 1 “Repeat for Print 2 and matching Print 4” do you mean Print 3 instead of 2?
Alyce says
Whoops, yes! Thanks!
Margaret (margiestitcher) says
thanks for this latest block and all the best for the move presume you will fly to Melbourne it will be a lot colder
Alyce says
Yes, flying down from Cairns. And yes, a lot colder, haha! But still not as cold as Tokyo was in winter, so we’re consoling ourselves with that fact 😉

How exciting to have your family back together! I know you will enjoy setting up a new home and making new friends, but it will be sad to leave others behind. Take the time you need, don’t frazzle yourself. I’m fine with making this block, then even a block hiatus, if you need it. I’m caught up, except for block 12, and can relax on my laurels. LOL Wait. Don’t laurels have thorns?
Alyce says
Thank you so much for your kind words, Susan, I truly appreciate it! I’m a hard task master on myself, that’s for sure. And, LOL! I have always wondered that myself… although maybe because they were worn, they were de-thorned?!
Krysta says
Alyce, what size do the individual units get trimmed to? It doesn’t say.
Alyce says
Oh dear, good catch!! It’s 3.5″.
Krysta says
Thanks.
