I’m so excited to share this quilt with you! It is my first quilt started and finished in Australia (and also my first blog post from our new home!), and if you follow me on Instagram – @blossomheartquilts – then you’ll have seen that I got to use my brand new iron and ironing board to make the binding for this quilt. As I said, it’s the little things in life… but I’ll share more about those later this week!
Once you’ve chosen your fabric, made your star blocks, and assembled your quilt, the next step is to finish the quilt, and that means making some quilting decisions. I had some ideas, like doing some straight lines to either side of the seams running diagonally through the quilt. But as I laid it out on the floor in front of me, I realised that it’d be fun to do something in each star block to emphasise the hexagons. And that’s when I realised that it’d be even more fun to draw inspiration from the Blueberry Park hand-drawn prints – six-petal daisies would be perfect!
I raided my box of warm Aurifil threads and pulled out 9 different colours to match the various colours of the star blocks, and used a mustard for the bobbin to match the mustard lawn I used for the backing. Which yes, meant a lot of thread changes.
As I pondered what to do in the background hexaons, my cousin came up with the perfect answer. You see, I wanted to do some straight lines, to contrast the loopy daisies, but who has time to use a walking foot and all the direction changes needed to go around hexagons?! Not me, anyway. But she suggested to use the Strand prints – organic lines with the occasional loop. Perfect! I needed to add a little more quilting in the middle to secure it better, so I added the little four-leaf clover/sprout from the Sprouting Row prints.
A purple/red shot cotton for the binding finished the quilt off perfectly, before my cousin also got inducted into the world of quilt photography – “A little lower, a little to your left, straighten it up, stand still”…
For those who haven’t followed along from the beginning, I used just one jelly roll + about 4.5 yards, which meant I adjusted the layout slightly to keep the number of hexagons at the top and bottom neatly balanced, and my quilt has finished at 51″ x 56″. I think I have enough leftover binding from this quilt to use for a pillow, so I think I will use the leftover triangles from this quilt to make a coordinating pillow cover!
The Little Ruby quilt has been a labour of love, but I’m thrilled with the outcome! It’s so worth it. A beautiful gradient of colours, the earthy mustard backing, the shot cotton binding… I suspect it may end up on my sofa instead of in a pile of finished quilts for “just in case”! In the meantime, be sure to come back tomorrow for an exciting new pattern series launch! Here’s a sneak peek of the first one for you…

Love this!! So striking. Great gradation of colours, and the quilting is just perfect. Did you have a million threads to bury though?
Alyce says
Nope, I just do a little back stitch knotting – if it’s good enough for Angela Walters, it’s good enough for me!! 😉
