Anyone else feeling like this year is just flying?! How is it August already?! But it does also mean it’s time for block 15 from the Modern HST Sampler! If this is the first time you’re reading this, fear not, you can join in at anytime. Start with this one or go back to the beginning, it’s up to you. This year, we’re making 24 modern half-square triangle quilt blocks, and by the end of the year, you will not only have a beautiful sampler quilt, but you will have some well-honed HST making skills. If you need more information, you can find out more about:
- The QAL and fabric requirements
- Required and recommended tools
- Tips for HST accuracy
- Frequently Asked Questions
- The rest of the blocks!
This quilt along has been structured so that you slowly ease your way into half-square triangles. We started off with 4″ finished HSTs (4.5″ unfinished), and then conquered 3″ finished HSTs (3.5″ unfinished). This time, we’re back to making 4″ finished HSTs, but also adding in half-sized ones too that finish at 2″ (2.5″ unfinished)! We’re still using the same methods of making the half-square triangles – 2 at a time, 4 at a time, and 8 at a time – but now we’re making two different sizes within the same blocks.
Fabrics used from the Modern HST Sampler Kit:
Anna Elise Cold Geo Mist, Blueberry Park Ultra Marine Sprouting Row Yardage,
Squared Elements Cielo, Kona Oyster
Turnstile

Instructions
Step 1. Pair the 7.5″ Print 1 and a background square and make 4 HSTs. Open the HSTs and press the seam towards the print or darker fabric colour. Trim to 4.5″. Repeat for Print 2 and the remaining background square.
Step 2. Pair a Print 3 square with the remaining Print 1 square and make 2 HSTs. Open the HSTs and press the seam towards the print or darker fabric colour. Trim to 2.5″. Repeat for the remaining Print 2 square.
Step 3. Arrange the HSTs and remaining background squares to create the Turnstile block layout. Sew each set of HSTs together to form the the square units. Press seams in alternate directions to nest seams.
Step 4. Sew the rows, pressing seams in each row toward the background squares in order to nest seams and reduce bulk. Sew the rows together, pressing the seams open.
Step 5. Press the block, and trim to 12.5” square if necessary, keeping 1/4″ between the outer HST points and the edge of the block.

Quarter 2 Linky Update
Good news, guys! As we had our internet finally connected last week, that means that things are going to start returning back to normality around here. And that includes finally having the official sharing of your blocks 7-12! August has five Mondays, which normally means a rest week, but instead, we’ll use the last week as the sharing instead. I believe that I have found a way for those who don’t have blogs or Instagram to easily be able to share your pictures in a way that is large enough for everyone else to see them properly. So I will share more about that in a couple of weeks’ time! In the meantime, make sure you’re all up to date so that you can be in the running for some pretty special prizes.

I like all you are doing. I have had to take off from doing the last three. I’m moving from Ohio to Northern Arizona. The truck comes tomorrow to get our things.

Good luck!

7-12 are done, just 13-15 are behind. Better get cracking over here! I like the way your colors work in this block and hope I can do the same.
Alyce says
Woohoo! Can’t wait to see them all in a couple of weeks 🙂

Seven to twelve are done. Thirteen is done, fourteen in cut and on my design wall waiting to be sewn. Fifteen- I have the colours picked and will, hopefully, cut tomorrow after sewing fourteen. Summer colds sucks!!!

Oh no! I agree, all you want to do is snuggle up, but ugh, too hot! Get better soon x
