Anyone else feeling like this year is just flying?! How is it August already?! But it does also mean it’s time for block 15 from the Modern HST Sampler! If this is the first time you’re reading this, fear not, you can join in at anytime. Start with this one or go back to the beginning, it’s up to you. This year, we’re making 24 modern half-square triangle quilt blocks, and by the end of the year, you will not only have a beautiful sampler quilt, but you will have some well-honed HST making skills. If you need more information, you can find out more about:
- The QAL and fabric requirements

- Tips for HST accuracy
- Frequently Asked Questions
- The rest of the blocks!
This quilt along has been structured so that you slowly ease your way into half-square triangles. We started off with 4″ finished HSTs (4.5″ unfinished), and then conquered 3″ finished HSTs (3.5″ unfinished). This time, we’re back to making 4″ finished HSTs, but also adding in half-sized ones too that finish at 2″ (2.5″ unfinished)! We’re still using the same methods of making the half-square triangles – 2 at a time, 4 at a time, and 8 at a time – but now we’re making two different sizes within the same blocks. Well, sometimes… this one is just all 2″ finished HSTs!
Fabrics used from the Modern HST Sampler Kit:
Blueberry Park Yarrow Strand, Blueberry Park Navy Rough Patch,
Blueberry Park Fog Dotty Sunflowers, Kona Oyster
Cross Angle
Fabric Requirements
Print 1 (yellow)
2 – 6″ x 6″ squares
Print 2 (light blue)
1 – 6″ x 6″ square
Print 3 (dark blue)
1 – 6″ x 6″ square
Background
8 – 2.5″ x 2.5″ squares
1 – 4.5″ x 4.5″ square
2 – 6″ x 6″ squares
Block should measure 12.5” x 12.5”. Use a 1/4″ seam and press seams toward the darker print, or as directed.
Instructions
Step 1. Pair the Print 1 and 6″ background squares and make 8 HSTs. Open the HSTs and press the seam towards the print or darker fabric colour. Trim to 2.5″. Pair Print 2 and Print 3 and repeat.
Step 2. Arrange the HSTs and remaining background squares to create the Windmill block layout. Sew each set of HSTs together to form the the square units. Press seams in alternate directions to nest seams.
Step 3. Sew the rows, pressing seams in each row toward the background squares in order to nest seams and reduce bulk. Sew the rows together, pressing the seams open.
Step 4. Press the block, and trim to 12.5” square if necessary, keeping 1/4″ between the outer HST points and the edge of the block.

I love this block. Not sure how I have missed this all year. I think I may need to start at Block 1. Thanks for having this great QAL.

I keep waiting to use my jelly roll, but the hst’s are 2″ before sewing. Hope we get a block with even smaller pieces so I can use it.
Judith Blinkenberg says
What I ment was that the 2.5 sewn together then trimmed come to 2″ before I would sew them with other 2′ pieces. Hope that is clearer.

Love the fabrics you’ve used in this block, Alyce. This year is flying by faster than you think – it’s September 🙂
