Whew, it has been a busy month of making quilts for the family! This is the third and last one for my family that I’ve made over the past few weeks…
When I was considering whether to make the Summer Breeze quilt pattern or not, what pushed me into saying yes was that I could use the leftover pieces to make a second quilt. When you’re cutting out the triangles from your strips of fabric, you end up with two sets – one that has the shorter strip on the base of the triangle, and one set that has the shorter strip at the tip. The former set has more triangles so you can make the Summer Breeze quilt, and the latter has 1/3 less so you can make a smaller quilt. So that is what I did!
My dad requested a smaller one just to cover his legs when in bed, which this quilt will do beautifully. I had run out of background fabric, otherwise I could’ve added a little more in length with an extra row or two of blocks. Instead, I decided to use up the leftover strips of fabric from my fat quarters.
This quilt got the same all-over loopy stipple as my original Summer Breeze quilt, and backing, but unlike the first quilt, where I did a scrappy binding, this one uses the backing fabric as binding. I like that both quilts have 1) used up pretty much all the Kaffe Fassett fabrics, and 2) included a scrappy touch but in different ways!
Alright, now to clean up all the green and purple fabrics lying around and start something new!
Fat Quarter Shop supplied me with all the fabric and rulers needed, all opinions and cut-off points are 100% mine.

I love that you used the “discard” pieces. I’m intending to use mine, but haven’t pieced them together yet. You are too funny–“all opinions and cut-off points are 100% mine”.

Haha, it’s the truth with stretchy bias pieces like these 😉

Waste not want not. I sew my discards along with the main piece. You dad will love the quilt. I love the colours and you can never go wrong with Kaffe fabrics.

Sometimes I sew my leftovers at the same time – they’re great to chain piece in between chain piecing the main project! Especially when making flying geese if the leftover triangles are big enough.
