I have a confession. I’d never made a pincushion until last week. Not once, not anything! I so rarely pin anything myself, so I have never had the need to make one for myself, but then I joined an Australia-wide Modern Quilt Guild pincushion swap because peer pressure. And mercifully, I was partnered with Jenna in Sydney, whom I’ve met with and went fabric shopping in Japan. Yay for a friendly face, haha! And so, I took a deep breath and got planning. I decided to try and piece a hexagon shape, using Jenna’s colour preferences to guide the fabrics (blues and acid colours).
I traced a hexagon tile coaster that we have, and then drew lines to segment it into 6 parts, before foundation paper piecing it in two halves. In hindsight, I think it’d look cooler if I’d pieced it based on wedges/the sides as opposed to the corners, but anyway! This is the result, and I fussy cut a unicorn for the backing (from the Lizzy House print in the background). I used some craft stuffing pellets (the kind that you use to weight down teddy bears or dolls) to add some weight, and then filled it up with polyfill for the squishy bulk. It was a fun little project, and I think I need to make myself one now too!

Aw, thanks Susan, I hope so too! And yes, I’m hoping the parcel pick up notice sitting in my bag ready for on the way to school pick up is my pincushion!

An adorable pin cushion! Great job and now that you have one done, I bet there will be more! I haven’t done one before, but am scared to start as I hear they are addicting!!

Well, seeing as I just received a (different) pincushion this weekend, I’m thinking I may need to make a couple more myself to sit on my windowsill with my new pincushions…

You’ve NEVER made a pincushion before?! This might be the start of the slippery slope. The little things are addictive.
Alyce says
Never! But I’m already thinking about what I could make next…
