Another month, another play with my quilting bee queens’ blocks! This month, Rebecca aka @oneweebird chose the Star Plus block. She asked for predominantly black prints for the stars, and bright citrusy prints for the plus (for which she shared a cactus print to inspire our choices), with black and white for the plus background and a solid for the outside. I love that citrus can include a bright plummy colour!
For my second, a Carolyn Friedlander orange was the perfect choice. It was also still sitting on the floor next to my machine from… I don’t even remember what, ha, oops! Anyone else end up with piles of random fabrics like that?!
There’s not too much to play with in the Star Plus block in EQ8, so I decided I’d first show how Rebecca’s quilt will look from what we’ve made for her.
It’s fascinating how the black just blends seamlessly into the background! Your eye is drawn to the bright pluses, and the light diamonds pop out. Rebecca said white, cream, or light grey for those solids, and it doesn’t really matter what is used, they really pop against the black. But what about if you switch the fabrics around? The inverse fabric placement?
Ooh, that’s a bit brighter and more colourful! Even though it’s the exact same prints/colours in the same blocks, it almost looks more scrappy… or is that just me? This is why I love EQ8 – you can so easily change fabricss around in EQ8 to try something different. You can easily answer that “What if…” question that just won’t leave you alone.

I love the Star Plus Block and how you’ve shown us do many ideas using this Block. I tried to find the pattern but have had no luck finding it. Is it still available?
