Today is the start of AQC (the Australasian Quilt Convention), and I’ll be working there with AccuQuilt! I love working with brands in the quilting industry, and the team at Blessington (who distribute Pfaff and AccuQuilt) are absolutely fantastic to work with. And part of the fun has been sharing a block of the month sampler quilt on the AccuQuilt blog – Patisserie.
Patisserie uses the Qube sets to make 12 different quilt blocks, and it uses each die at least once. Block 9 will be coming out later this month, but I wanted to get the quilt for the 8″ Qube version all finished up now so that it could hang in the AccuQuilt stand at AQC.
This quilt uses a variety of sweet light and dark solids from The Creative Retreat to show off the baked-treat-inspired block designs – donuts, eclairs, danishes, and more. So of course I wanted to add a little plate of goodies to emphasise the deliciousness of this quilt 😉 And the kids weren’t complaining either… a morning tea picnic at the park!
I kept the quilting fairly simple on this one. I outlined around the block details in a neutral thread approximately 1/4″ from the seams. Then using matching threads for the solids, I added some more various outlining within the blocks. The final touch was to put Fancy Pfaff into full force, and use some fancy stitches to add some “decorative piping” detail to my baked goods.
I chose one stitch for each colour, so I used 5 different stitches across the quilt top. It was so fun to experiment with the stitches and to see how they stitched up! I was careful to choose designs that weren’t too intensely detailed, so that they could be easily sewn along the seam lines.
As this quilt will be travelling around a bit with AccuQuilt, I needed to add a label… but I didn’t have to make one this time! Nope, I just stitched in one of my custom woven labels while I was machine binding. Oh, and that binding?! Can’t wait to tell you about that! Let’s just say that someone heard my cries of binding-making despair 😉
This quilt finishes up at 30″ x 32″, and would make such a sweet little baby quilt! I’ll be sharing the layout finishing details later on at the end of the BOM series on the AccuQuilt blog for this one, and for the 6″ block version I made too (which is quite different!). If you’re in Melbourne for AQC, come and say hi, see this quilt in person, and check out the show specials!

How fun, I think I’d like to come to your picnic with all those goodies and sit on your cute quilt.

Hehe, there’s plenty of goodies to go around!

I love how you used fancy stitching as part of the quilting. I have a question. Did you do these stitches with your walking foot? With my machine, the manual says not to use stitches that require a backward motion, which is pretty limiting. I keep thinking I should just try it anyway, but I’m afraid to risk it.

Thanks, Kathleen! No, I didn’t use a walking foot. The Pfaff Passport has integrated dual feed, so it evenly feeds through the fabric regardless of what foot. And it just tells me which stitch to engage it for or not.
