Early last year, I was a part of my guild’s Liberty quilting bee. There were six of us, so it ran for six months and each month we made two blocks for the queen, and all our blocks were to be made predominantly with Liberty fabric. Fun!
One huge reason I love Liberty fabric is the fussy cutting potential. There are so many cute novelty prints and those with unique motifs that lend perfectly to fussy cutting. So I figured I’d put my bee to work to making me some fussy cut economy square quilt blocks for me. I asked for a fussy cut centre, with a light grey solid for the first lot of triangles, and another Liberty print that coordinated in colour to the centre square. Oh boy did they deliver!
Fast forward to a few months later, and it was time to propose the next year’s worth of article ideas to Make Modern, and it was time to do another article with corresponding quilt pattern: discussing economy block maths and methods (and sizes!) is a great one to quilt up… and the perfect excuse to finally finish this quilt.
Hide And Seek is the result. Mixing in a blend of sizes adds some extra interest to the quilt, as well as giving your eyes somewhere to rest. So many little blocks can get a little overwhelming! Not to mention means you don’t have to make quite so many 😉 The quilt pattern finishes at 40″ x 48″ – the perfect baby size – but the beautiful thing about a quilt like this – want it bigger? Just keep sewing!
You can find the pattern for Hide And Seek, plus my regular Maths & Methods article, in issue 25, pluuuus:
An interview with one of my all-time favourite quilters, Elizabeth Hartman.
The pattern for this Makes You Happy mini quilt by Sam Hunter. Plus so much more.
And all for just $6 with the code 25issues (valid until tomorrow) – grab your copy here. They also have some fantastic new subscription options too for six months or 12 months, which you should check out if you’d love to get Make Modern every other month. Being an e-magazine, I love that I can just read it on my phone or tablet, or on the computer to print out the necessary templates or patterns, and not have it take up any space in my house! Considering that I’m currently in the midst of packing, this feature is ESPECIALLY appreciated, ha!

Lovely liberty quilt! It was a great idea to use that gray to really set them off.

Thanks, Rachel! Yes, such colourful Liberty fabrics definitely need the darker(ish) neutral to contrast nicely.
