When it comes to thinking about your quilty plans and goals for 2019, one option to consider is signing up and committing to a block of the month (BOM) or a quilt along (QAL) or something similar to give you something to slowly on over the year. A small bit of progress each month will build up to something big at the end of the year! Not to mention the opportunities for making new friends, learning something new, or practicing an older skill that could do with some more work. In today’s blog post, I’ve rounded up a few options from around the internet that are diverse enough to hopefully spark some inspiration inside you! They include free and paid options to suit all budgets, and remember, supporting small quilt businesses is oh so very appreciated by the designers 😉
Papercuts BOM
Amy from During Quiet Time has designed a gorgeous set of foundation paper pieced designs inspired by snowflakes cut from paper – Papercuts BOM. This is one for the confident paper piecers, and you’ll get the first block upon purchase plus quilt finishing instructions in December’s instalment.

Quiet Play Pattern Club
Talking of foundation paper piecing, the Foundation Paper Piecing Queen AKA Kristy from Quiet Play has launched a Pattern Club! Each month, you’ll receive a word pattern, a picture pattern, and one from her (extensive!) archives. Plus on sign up, you’ll receive a bonus freebie to keep you going until the first lot goes out on January 15th.

Sunset Isle QAL
This one is of course my favourite 😉 The official quilt along for 2019 is Sunset Isle – a row-of-the-month quilt pattern in collaboration with Ava & Neve. On the first of each month, subscribers will received a new row pattern, which cover a range of techniques and are very scrap- and precut-friendly. You can sign up just to receive the pattern each month (and use your own fabrics) or sign up to get the pattern and the required Liberty prints each month to make it in rainbow order just like my quilt.
Price:Â AU$20 for the year for pattern only, or $27.50 per month for pattern + fabric bundle (early bird pricing ends Dec. 21)
What:Â 12 rows
Size: Finished quilt – 60″ x 72″
Where: Pattern only here; and, pattern + fabric here
Miss Lizzy Sampler BOM
Angie from GnomeAngel is hosting her first solo block of the month program – Miss Lizzy Sampler. There are two options: a traditional version using 9″ blocks and finishing at 105″ square; and, a contemporary version that makes 18″ versions of the blocks and finishes at 78″ square.
Price:Â AU$30.00 for the year, or $50 for both (early bird pricing ends Dec. 31)
What:Â 12 blocks at 9″ (traditional – make 48) or 18″ (contemporary – make 13)
Size: Finished quilts: traditional – 105″ x 105″; contemporary – 78″ square

Aurifil Designer of the Month BOM
Each year, Pat Sloan hosts a BOM series for Aurifil, featuring 12 different quilt designers – one per month. Next year, the theme is Traditions, and if you sew along and share your blocks, you could win a set of 12 Aurifil threads each month! You never know what the designers will come up with, and it’s a great way to try something new.

Threadology BOM
The 2019 charity QAL from Fat Quarter Shop has been announced – Threadology – and is running from January to June. Each year, Fat Quarter Shop hosts a charity QAL where the patterns are free, but they invite quilters to donate to charity and Moda matches the donations too! You can even get a quilt kit to make the same version as their sample, which includes some bonus goodies too.
Price:Â Free!
What: 8Â block designs (make 36)
Size:Â Finished quilt – 52.5″ x 68.5″

DIY BOM Sampler Quilt
One option for the especially driven and focused quilters is to create your own block of the month sampler quilt. Whether you follow the schedule of a QAL from previous years like the Modern HST Sampler (24 free blocks) or purchase a sampler pattern and space it out like the Milky Way Sampler (13 foundation paper pieced stars)… pun totally intended… you could set your own pace and your own schedule to get a quilt done by the end of the year.
So what are you thinking of doing in 2019? If you know of other QAL and BOM options for 2019, let us know in the comments!

This year, I participated in the Summer Sampler 2018 with blocks being released each Monday. I enjoyed it so much that I decided I wanted to do something similar again. For 2019, I’ve signed up for the HST BOM 2019. It is hosted by Lee Heinrich at http://freshlypieced.com/ I found the pace of a block a week really good to keep me going without overwhelming me so I decided I will make the HST BOM in two versions – one with solids and a second one with prints. I can hardly wait to get started.

That sounds like a great idea! Enjoy!
