No April Fools pranks around here, just a new row of our Sunset Isle quilts to share. Fun story – my daughter’s due date could have been April 1 or 2… we went with April 2nd just to avoid the April Fools jokes! She came early anyway, on March 28th, and we like to joke it was the only time in her life she was early… although the fact that she took 3 days of labour to do so should’ve given us a clue of what we were in for, ha!
Anyway, on to Sunset Isle! It seems like the log cabins threw some people for a loop, productivity seemed to slow down in March. I can understand, they’re not as quick and easy to whip through! A little more concentration required. But that doesn’t meant that there weren’t some beautiful log cabin blocks popping up in the Sunset Isle Facebook group and on Instagram on #sunsetislequilt (see below). And other blocks too! We have one quilter’s son starting on his own version too!!
MONTH 4
I’m happy to report that row 4 is back to the quick and easy blocks – economy blocks! Also known as square in a square blocks. Also known as the perfect opportunity to pop in some fussy cut prints if that works for your Sunset Isle quilt! I finally had a chance with this row to include some of my Hello Kitty Liberty stash, and I’m loving it. It’s also another dash of solid Liberty fabric.
I want to take this moment to encourage you. These kinds of blocks are one of my perfectionism nemeses – especially when made with the kind of difference in thickness that exists between linen and Liberty. Each block on their own doesn’t ever seem to look perfectly square, and it can frustrate me. And perhaps you feel the same way too with these blocks, or other kinds of quilting blocks.
But once you sew them together, things start to even out. Fabric is forgiving. It has some wriggle room and some give. Now, perhaps being a 1/2″ undersized isn’t quite fudge-able and redeemable, but you can hide a lot in seam allowances! Remember, we aren’t about perfection, we’re about progress and moving on and finishing our projects. Once it is all together, no one will notice the odd point here and there that’s been lost as they will be too busy admiring the finished quilt.
