What a fun month it has been for the Liberty Mini QAL! Martina and I have loved seeing Cinque Terre mini quilts popping up on Instagram, seeing them grow block by block. And the variety of colour palettes! From curated palette to 100% scrappy, there’s something for everyone’s tastes, that’s for sure.
First up, I’ll share the quilt tops that were made, and are now in the quilting process. Like this adorable pink and green version by Anna – can you see the little Hello Kitty?!
This warm, bright version by Joey also features some fantastic fussy cutting.
Jayne used her very small Liberty stash to make an adapted version of Cinque Terre by doing a Tim Gunn and making it work. Great work! I also love the embroidered scripture appliqued to the centre square.
On to the finished quilts, and we have this rainbow version by Michele, with coordinating solids for each of her Liberty Capel blocks.
Rose used her October bundle from the Liberty Society to create this teal stunner, using the background for the binding as well. Love that look!
Such a sweet version made by Kathleen – so bright and colourful!
And finally, the winner of the Liberty bundle + Entwined pattern is… Lilia! We adored her addition of the navy border, it really sets it all off so beautifully.
We’re also awarding a bonus Special Mention prize to Janet for her incredible entry – making her Cinque Terre mini quilt in time to take to the actual Cinque Terre! Definitely a highlight of my pattern design career to see this photo pop up.
I also want to send a huge thanks to my fabulous co-QALers for joining in and helping spread the Liberty Mini QAL love! I adore Caitlin’s red, white and blue palette, and how she’s swapped in the red strips for the corners. And a faux piped binding! So good.
I love how Ali used a variety of prints for her blocks, and her straight-line quilting makes for some incredible texture.
And then there’s Jane, who used a different blue Liberty print for every single piece of this blue ombre quilt. WHAT?! She said it’s been the perfect scrap buster! I also love how she’s paired it with a gorgeous Japanese chambray from Ava & Neve for the background.
Large Liberty Pillow
As for my Cinque Terre make for the QAL, I used my April bundle from Liberty Society, and paired it with a navy solid Liberty lawn, and turned it into a giant 24″ pillow. It’s so big! My children were a little in awe of how big it is compared to the usual 18″ ones I make. It was hard to know where to photograph it properly, so we’ve ended up with the driveaway. Classy.
I quilted the top in three different Aurifil thread colours – my favourite creamy gold 2000 in the warmer blocks, a pale blue 2805 in the cooler blocks, and navy 2785 for creating a diamond through the navy squares.
I then used two prints to make an envelope closure for the back of the pillow – a Victoria Findlay Wolf print, and an adorable Japanese map print that I’ve been hoarding for several years!
It’s complete with the usual spelling mistakes (“Queenslan”) but also includes Italy, so it was a fun choice to go on my Cinque Terre pillow.
To finish it off, I used the same navy Liberty lawn to bind the pillow – I love the way binding frames a patchwork pillow! I’m almost always a fan of a darker binding to create a frame for a quilt, and this one is no exception. Once again, I used a zigzag stitch to attach the binding, and I used the Aurifil 2000 thread again to show off the “fancy” stitching. I’m definitely becoming a big fan of decorative stitching for machine binding!
A huge thanks once again to everyone who joined in, and to Martina at Ava & Neve for co-hosting this quilt along with me!
