This month is a book-filled month! First I announce my book, Mini Masterpieces, then I make some blocks from The Seedling Quilts by Jodi Godfrey, and now it’s a Patchwork Picnic kinda day!
Patchwork Picnic by Gracey Larson features 30 patchwork blocks that celebrate the outdoors, with instructions for both 6″ and 12″ finished quilt blocks. You can then put them all together into a sampler quilt, or use one of 7 project finishing ideas to make something smaller like a potholder. For more information, you can read more about her book writing process on her blog here.
I decided to make the bear block, because I could see this little guy in black prints with the perfect Jennifer Sampou metallic print in my stash for his nose! And I was not disappointed with how he turned out! Look at that shiny nose.
I added a dark grey border and am now hunting down some cutesie black and white prints to finish it off as a sweet baby quilt. Any suggestions or leads?!
Piecing quilt blocks that contain such small pieces like these kinds of quilt blocks is a bit of a challenge if you’re not used to it… like moi! I found that using a piece of scrap fabric to start the seam really helpful so that my machine isn’t tempted to try and eat the little corners. And instead of marking allll the diagonal seam lines, I put a piece of washi tape to mark where to guide the corners of the pieces so that they perfectly meet the needle. Saves so much time! And then be sure to press (not iron back and forth!) well using starch or a starch alternative – I use Flatter (in yummy Yuzu) to help keep my piecing nice and flat.
If you love these kinds of pictorial quilt blocks, you’ll love Patchwork Picnic! Gracey is currently hosting a QAL for her book, so go check it out and follow the hashtag #patchworkpicnicsal to join in the fun.
