When you design quilt patterns, you typically make at least 2 different versions of the quilt just to make sure it’s all working properly. But mostly because you have so many palette and fabric ideas to use for the pattern, ha! For my Double Dash quilt pattern and its two different block sizes, I clearly had to make at least one quilt for each block size before the pattern release. I had planned on doing a baby quilt with the 12″ block size with a layer cake, until I spied something else while fabric shopping for the Alison Glass pattern cover version… Mazy by Dylan Mierzwinski. A fabric collection I’ve long-adored for it’s retro-but-modern colours and style.
You see, I was expecting a new niece or nephew last month and had planned on giving the a different quilt altogether, but whose daddy just happens to be a keen veggie gardener. Combine that with an admired fabric range… and I made a baby quilt with the 12″ block using Mazy instead!
For the backing, I found the perfect print for the newest member of the family – this fun yellow print from Tool Time by Whistler Studios. This baby’s siblings love the colour yellow, and playing with tools like daddy does. This quilt really was meant to be to welcome our new family member!
For the quilting, I used a serpentine stitch on my Pfaff Passport and quilted 2″ apart – will hold the quilt together nicely, but is still soft and drapey for the days of snuggling and fort building to come. And another Mazy print for the binding (machine stitched, of course!).
I had the pleasure of flying over for the birth so as to babysit my sister’s other children, and to meet my new nephew with hours of his birth. Having lived overseas or interstate for all the births of my niece and nephews, it was so precious to get to cuddle one so fresh! And of course a fun photo opportunity.
And of course, a photo in their veggie garden! In between rain showers, and while herding three active children under the age of 6. Super aunt!
My creative motto is, “Create what you love, with love, to love”. I love making this design, I made it with love for my sister’s baby by the fabric choices I made, and I made it to love on this precious baby. When making quilts, they must meet at least one of my motto’s criteria. So when a quilt meets all three parts of my creative motto? It makes my heart so happy, and my soul so fulfilled! I was made to create, and this is one perfect example of why. And it’s my dearest hope that I can enable you to do just that too!
The Double Dash pattern is on sale this week for just $9 (normally $12) for both the PDF and the paper pattern. The pattern is at the printer right now, and I expect it to arrive early next week, so if you’d like to preorder that at the sale price, it’s a great time to do it.
