It’s an Aurifil-ed month around here, that’s for sure. Not only has my Mini Masterpieces thread collection launched, and I was interviewed about all things Mini Masterpieces on the Aurifil blog earlier this week, but today you can find me over on Auribuzz again as the Aurifil Designer of the Month! This year’s theme for their BOM sew along is Traditions, and I’ve chosen one of my family’s most favourite tradition each year from Christmas.
I know, it’s October, and perhaps you were expecting a Halloween tradition? But Halloween isn’t much of a thing here in Australia (although it’s slowly growing in popularity), and it’s certainly not something that’s a tradition in our family. But you know what is? The handmade Advent calendar brought out each December.
Inspired by the Advent wall hanging I made a few years ago, I designed a rectangular-checkerboard quilt block. We were asked to make our blocks in predominantly red and white fabrics, which is well-suited for a Christmas quilt block! And I still had some yardage of this Kate Spain Christmas fabric in my stash, so that was an easy choice to make.
Head on over to the blog post on Auribuzz to read all about the tradition behind this quilt block, find out my secret collection (hint – you can see a peek in the photo above!), and download the quilt block tutorial. And if you make it, be sure to enter it via the link at the bottom of the post by November 14th to be in the running to win a box of Aurifil thread. Nice!
See the variety of Advent blocks created here.

I saw your interview on the Aurifil website. I love your advent quilt and the fact that it’s become worn with use. So great! Did you mention somewhere that there will be a blog hop regarding your book too? In November maybe? I love sewing mini quilts.

Thanks, Kathleen! Yes, there’s a book hop happening in November, and then there’s a sew along happening for the book next year for everyone to get involved in! I’ll be sharing more details of that next month.
