My latest pattern, Origami, is just perfect for layer cakes! Especially the small bed sized quilt – it has 42 blocks, which is the exact same number as pieces in a Moda layer cake. And I had one of those lying around – Voyager by Kate Spain. So I added in a couple of fat quarters of coordinating solids for the folded corners, and off I went!
I really can’t emphasise how quick a pattern this is to make, especially when using a layer cake. Stack and whack, baby, stack and whack! What that means is that I had 3-4 pieces in a pile, and cut them all at once. Measure twice, cut once, and you’re all good. I even pulled out my AccuQuilt to cut the smaller half-square triangles which meant it was even speedier (no need to trim those HSTs!)
As usual, I batch-tasked this quilt. In one sewing session, I spent sewing and pressing all the HSTs (20 minutes). The next session to sew the blocks together was squeezed in on a Saturday morning before heading to a ladies’ event at church (30 mins). That afternoon I then pressed all the blocks (15 minutes).
Sewing the quilt top together took a morning and approximately 1.5 cheesy, romantic holiday movies on Netflix… possibly a little longer because I got sucked into the movies at times! (btw can 100% recommend Holiday In The Wild because Rob Lowe and also a perfect example of this movie genre)
I must admit that I haven’t sewn the borders on yet, and I’m kinda tempted to not and simply add binding in the background fabric… I’m not sure. That’s one I need to ponder a little longer, but I love it! My daughter particularly really loves that navy and aqua print right in the middle of the picture below.
Kate Spain was my first Fabric Designer Crush around 8 years ago, and my love for her fabric has not waned. The colours she uses are gorgeous, and her artwork is stunning. I’m so glad I finally had the perfect pattern to showcase her prints like this!
One more thing to note – the Origami pattern includes the option for adding in a paper crane quilt block (or two or more!) and for this version, I didn’t add one so that I could use the full layer cake as-is. I will add that using a layer cake square and some of the solids would’ve had enough fabric to make a crane, but I wanted one Origami quilt that just had the “paper” blocks!
Don’t forget to grab the pattern while it’s on sale for just $9 – buy it here. Sale ends today (AEDST).
