Fun fact: Did you know that in Japan (and in other countries in Asia, too) they have two days to celebrate love? Valentines Day on February 14, and another a month later on March 14 called White Day. Traditionally, the girls give the guys little chocolates, candies or cakes (especially the homemade variety) on Valentines Day, and on White Day, the men reciprocate… although usually with something bought.
Another fun fact: I sketched up a series of different food groups as kawaii quilt blocks over two years ago featuring adorable little eyes… hence the kawaii (which means ‘cute’ in Japanese).
As such, I thought that February was the perfect month to release the Kawaii Cupcakes pattern out into the world! This foundation paper piecing pattern includes four different cupcake icing designs, with two options of cupcake wrappers to mix and match.
There’s Simple, Swirl, Cherry, and Ombre options for the icing, and Plain (perfect for using a novelty print!) and Striped options for the cupcake wrappers.

These adorable little blocks are foundation paper pieced, and measure 4 1/2″ x 4 1/2″ (4″ finished). So cute! I raided the scraps bin to make mine, using two pink solids for the icing, leftover grey linen scraps from my Sunset Isle quilt, and a sliver of the background fabric I used in my Origami quilt! The floral is a Japanese fat eighth I’ve had hoarded for years (I also used it for the backing on my potholder).
This sweet size means that they’re also charm square (5″ x 5″) friendly – one of my testers is using some Kate Spain charm squares to make her cupcake quilt blocks.

This size of quilt block makes them absolutely perfect for adding into other projects – turn them as-is into a coaster, use them on the side of a zippered pouch or tote bag, make a pincushion, a mini quilt… whatever you can imagine!

The Kawaii Cupcakes pattern includes instructions to use your cupcake quilt blocks to make a potholder. Oh yes, a cupcake potholder for baking! The perfect match, non? Each of the kawaii food patterns will include instructions on an option to use them for, and a potholder for these little guys was the winning option.

Pattern Outtake
Here’s a little sneak peek at the unglamorous journey to a finished pattern… trialing options for how to sew on the bias binding. Let’s just say that this is not the method I wrote in the pattern, ha! But my daughter loves this one – it’s the Rhapsody by Sedef Imer fabrics I used that’s caught her eye (as she’s a big fan of all things cyan and/or teal!) – and as my son said, it’s still perfectly usable as a potholder. So this one is off to serve it’s purpose in the kitchen, while the other one gets the pattern cover feature.
