Welcome back to the Happy Scrappy QAL! For all the QAL details, you can read this blog post here that provides more info on how this QAL is being run, but here’s the quick rundown to remind you:
- The Happy Scrappy QAL will be run right here on my blog, and go for about a month
- It’s a mystery quilt designed to use up some scraps, so get scrap-bin digging and don’t overthink the process
- Every 2-3 days I’ll be posting what blocks to make – either new ones, or some repeats of already-shared block patterns
- Each set of blocks posted is designed to take up to 30 minutes each day over the next 2-3 days
- Join in the QAL community on Instagram using #happyscrappyqal and in the Blossom Heart Quilts Facebook group.
If you’re just tuning in now, here’s the previous posts:
Post 1 – Cross Block + 4 Ribbon Blocks
Post 2 – Arch Blocks
Post 3 – Print Nine-Patch Blocks
Post 4 – 8 Ribbon Blocks
Post 5 – Skinny Strip Blocks
Post 6 – Background Nine-Patch Blocks
Today, we’re making four more Ribbon blocks.
Now, if you’ve made a mix of which direction your Ribbon blocks are angled, you can either re-do them to all be the same way (in either direction), or do half-half with half the blocks having the angles going one direction, and the other half of the blocks going the other direction. Either option is a valid option in this quilt and will work out just fine at the end.
Also, many people are sewing up the leftover triangles to make half-square triangles. You are welcome to use them however you like (or not use them – I collect all these kinds of triangle offcuts and give them to friends who use them!), but I will do a little round up post at the end of the QAL of suggestions for what to do with the final amount of leftover triangles.
What you’ll need
Print:
4 – 3 1/2″ x 9 1/2″ rectangles
Background:
8 – 3 1/2″ x 3 1/2″ squares
See the tutorial for the ribbon quilt blocks here.
Blocks should measure 3 1/2″ x 9 1/2″. Make four blocks.
Share your blocks using #happyscrappyqal on Instagram and in the Blossom Heart Quilts Facebook group! The next blog post will go up on Monday. If you’d like to make sure you don’t miss any posts, sign up for my weekly newsletter and you’ll be reminded each week of what blocks to make. Remember – this is a sew-at-your-own-pace QAL!

Thanks so much for doing this. It’s fun to look forward to the new blocks every few days – even though I have so many projects going now this one seems to take priority!

This is such fun! I’m so happy with the ribbon blocks, they have such movement, and yet are so easy to make! Thank you for this whole, cheerful project.
