Today’s the day – the Backsplash quilt pattern is now out! And be sure to read through to the end to find out some important shop and QAL news 😉
Backsplash might look a little familiar… And you’d be correct. I took my favourite part of the Happy Scrappy quilt and repeated it across the quilt like a tile pattern, creating what turned out to be fun, modern take on the granny square block. Also, hence the name, Backsplash, because it’s a tiled pattern!
The Backsplash quilt pattern includes three different sizes – Baby (45″ x 45″), Throw (63″ x 63″) and Bed (81″ x 81″). I made the Throw version for my cover star, and those four squares in the corner? That’s where the next “tile” would be! That’s why there’s only two corner squares for the Baby size and Bed size because of the way the repeat works.
Oh, and the fabric requirements? Backsplash is a fat quarter friendly pattern! Each tile can be made from one fat quarter. If you’re using yardage instead, you’ll need a 1/3 yard cut for each tile (just goes to show how handy fat quarters really can be).
Working on this quilt pattern has been my own version of a quarantine/lockdown/isolation project. Something that was just for ME as I navigated parenting and schooling over the past two months. Backsplash gave me something to focus on, something to use to turn any nervous, anxious, restless energy I had into something productive, mindful and fun.
The Backsplash quilt pattern is the kind of one that you can just cut strips into squares and rectangles, and then sit piece those squares and rectangles without too much mental energy required. Which is the perfect kind of quilt pattern for 2020!
For my pattern cover quilt, I was inspired by the backing fabric that I’ve had for a while now – this gorgeous floral from Avant Garde by Katarina Roccella for Art Gallery Fabrics (which I also used for the binding!). I pulled out 7 of the colours to create a bright and cheery palette, and used mostly Devonstone Solids. They’re made by Tilda, and are a beautiful fabric to work with – a nice thickness, soft hand, luscious colours. I used Barrier Blue, Tiger Prawn, Big Red, Spearmint, Light Pink, Grape Juice, and one Kona – Papaya.
To quilt my Backsplash quilt, I used a hera marker to mark the diagonal lines on the quilt top along one diagonal through the centre of each square.
And now for the important news! To celebrate the release of the Backsplash quilt pattern, all PDF patterns are 20% off this week, including Backsplash! No coupon needed, discount applied in cart, and sale ends Saturday 23rd May, 9am (AEST).
I will share more details on Wednesday, but there will be a quilt along for Backsplash happening in June! There’s prizes, Facebook and Instagram Lives, and more, so be sure to grab a copy of the Backsplash pattern this week and get thinking about your fabric choices.
