When I create a new pattern, I love to make a baby version – it’s always handy to have baby quilts on hand. And this Backsplash baby quilt is no exception – it’s headed to a dear friend who’s just had her first baby. And while I had started cutting the original pattern sample, this quilt top was actually finished first! I had four fat quarters of Trinket by Melody Miller in my stash, recently bought from a friend’s destash, and it was perfect to make up a sweet, modern baby quilt!
The Backsplash quilt pattern is perfect for showing off larger-scale prints like the beautiful flowers in these Trinket prints without losing the detail of the print (like what happens when cutting it up into small pieces). Fun fact – I’ve made three Backsplash quilts now, and this is the only one I’ve made using prints!
I finished piecing this top in early April and had to set it aside to continue working on the pattern and making the pattern cover star. But once the pattern was done and released, I was able to quickly quilt it up and finish it off.
The backing is an extra wide 60″ Anna Maria Horner fabric that I bought up a few years ago. Super handy width to have on hand for small quilts like this! I avoid piecing backings as much as possible. I’ll have to find a new 60″ fabric to stock up on soon enough! There’s only another couple of quilts’ worth left, I think.
For quilting, I did an organic wavy “straight line” quilting – this is where you use the settings you would for straight line quilting, but instead of keeping the quilt moving straight through the machine, gently pull the quilt side to side to wander your way across the quilt. Makes for a nice and soft and drapey quilt.
The binding is an Emma Jean Jansen print – the pop of yellow works beautifully with the Trinket prints, and the pink ties in well. Such a fun little accent!
