I adore star quilt blocks, as shown by the several star quilts I’ve designed over the years! One of my favourite patterns, Geode, was actually inspired by a Moroccan star design at a local restaurant. This quilt pattern first came out in 2017 and since then, I would like to think that I’ve improved in my pattern writing skills, haha! In fact, when I made a baby version earlier this year (oops, still to be blogged), I realised that there was a better way to write the cutting instructions, and I could add in a couple of extra, helpful diagrams.
So it’s not a complete house remodel, more like a pantry re-organisation with a fresh paint job too 😉 Yes, that’s right, time for a refreshed pattern look too! I do love my pink, but it’s been many years of it and I need a change. It’ll be a slow process of updating old patterns, but all new patterns will have the updated format.
Fat Quarter Friendly Quilt Pattern
So what’s different inside? Still the same great pattern and construction method! But now with easier cutting instructions for working with yardage, with WOF strips and subcutting like my other patterns, and I’ve ever so slightly adjusted the size of the squares for making the flying geese (no waste method) to help improve accuracy.
The Geode quilt pattern is also the perfect fat quarter friendly quilt pattern – using one fat quarter per block. And it shows off your prints oh so beautifully! So if you’re working with fat quarters, now there’s updated diagrams that will work for non-directional AND directional fabric alike, plus a table of cutting instructions to work block by block.
A Modern Star Quilt Pattern
The Geode quilt pattern is such a fun one to make – seeing the stars appear out of the prints, block by block, and especially the alternate blocks where the negative space between the prints create the star? Magical! It would also be super fun to just make a quilt from all of the Block 1 print-star blocks… Ooh, I’ll add that to my list to make!
Geode Quilt Sizes
I remade this version in the throw size, using just 16 fat quarters. Offering different quilt sizes is important to me so that you can make my patterns in the size that you need! Geode comes in four sizes:
- Baby quilt – 48″ x 48″
- Throw quilt – 64″ x 64″
- Queen quilt – 80″ x 80″
- King quilt – 96″ x 96″
You can see what these all look like on the original Geode quilt pattern testers blog post here.
Autumnal Colour Geode Quilt Kit
Oh yes, that’s right, there’s a Geode throw quilt kit available! Most of the fabrics I used for my new Geode quilt came from a Scribbly Gum Quilt Co bundle (I added in the Carolyn Friedlander leaves, and the Cotton + Steel “cotton wool”-esque prints) and I’ve teamed up with Joz to offer a 16-piece fat quarter quilt kit with background and binding also included so that you can make one in these gorgeous autumnal colours too!
You can also choose to not include the background fabric if you’d prefer to use your own. And heads up – Joz ships internationally, with capped shipping at AU$22 (approx $16USD). That’s a fantastic deal!
Geode Quilt Pattern
The new Geode quilt pattern is available in store now, and is on sale for just AU$10 this week (sale ends Friday) to celebrate it’s fresh new ‘do!
Note – All previous customers via my current online store should have received an email regarding the updated file. If you purchased it more than 3 years ago, please send me an email with your original receipt and I’ll send you the new pattern.

I purchased the geode pattern back in 2017 but have not received an update from you. I was in the QAL, with a navy and pink/orange quilt on Instagram, but since that time, my account was seriously hacked and had to delete the account and start over with a new Instagram account. I didn’t know everything associated with my account would be deleted including all posts. Who knew? I thought once you put something on the web it was there to stay. I have downloaded pattern on my PC but no receipt. I have photo of quilt that was originally posted on Instagram QAL, but unable to link it here.

Hi Terry,
Yes, it’s only those in the past 3 years that will have received the email due to when I changed over shop platforms. It even used to be available on Craftsy back in the day when that was a thing! I will send you an email.

I purchased the Geode pattern a few years ago and do not have a receipt. Never made it because I really couldn’t figure out the directions. If I received an email about updates I must have missed it. Would love the to get updated instructions so I can finally make this beautiful quilt. I have 2 email addresses so I’m not sure which one I used to make the original purchase

Hi Ruth, if it was purchased more than 3 years ago, you wouldn’t have received an email as it would’ve been purchased through old shop systems (Craftsy or other). I will send you an email.
